Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Moon Far Away – Athanor Eurasia (Prophecy)

384,400 KM to be precise and yes that is far away. Getting that out the way, here we have some gorgeous folk music from Arkhangelsk Russia to contemplate but it is one where we are told East meets West so… Continue Reading →

Deflore & Jaz Coleman – Party In The Chaos (Subsound)

If you have never heard of Italian instrumental duo Deflore, well you can no doubt be forgiven. They have never hit my radar despite having four albums out. If however you don’t know who Jaz Coleman is, well shame on… Continue Reading →

Stille Volk – Milharis (Prophecy)

Whatever the view is outside your window it’s time to cast it off and dream of the snow-capped mountains of The Pyrenees.  We are about to venture into the world of Stille Volk and it is an olden one without… Continue Reading →

Vltimas, Fen & De Profundis – London Underworld 21/6/19

There has been plenty to entertain today and firstly we are all amused no end of a certain band of wimps and posers crying and throwing toys out of prams in France. There’s plenty more excitement from those on the… Continue Reading →

The Meads Of Asphodel – Running Out Of Time Doing Nothing (Godreah)

First full length album in 6 years and there may actually be a sigh of relief that The Meads are not tackling anything biblical or historical this time around and are just running…. They do seem to go down hugely… Continue Reading →

NRVK – Thghtlss Lght (Van)

A member of NRVK once went on popular British quiz show Countdown and asked Carol Vorderman (it was an old-school episode) for a vowel and was told no! It obviously affected them seriously judging by their new EP release Thghtlss… Continue Reading →

Kludde – In de Kwelm (Consouling Sounds)

It’s always worth keeping a close eye on the furtive black metal scenes of countries such as Belgium and Holland; there is no escaping the fact they put much of what is going on in the UK underground to shame…. Continue Reading →

The Black Moriah – Road Agents Of The Blast Furnace (Folter Records)

Biblical mountains and an album title that sounds straight out of a Mad Max or generic knock off Italian post-apocalyptic film. I have sat here trying to make sense of The Black Moriah for a little while now. They describe… Continue Reading →

Darkthrone – Old Star (Peaceville)

Yep I know this is in the shops (what few remain) already but we are not exactly late to the party. The old stars behind the album should need no introduction Gylve and Ted aka Fenriz and Nocturno Culto have… Continue Reading →

Membranes – What Nature Gives… Nature Takes Away (Cherry Red Records)

The Membranes had always been on my peripheral vision and having been around since 1977 well they should have been. However after seeing them a couple of years back supporting Killing Joke founding member and Louder Than War head honcho… Continue Reading →

Monasterium – Church of Bones (Nine Records)

Unlocking the door to doom ain’t always easy. Even when the tools at your disposal add up to a veritable battering ram that should unleash the melancholy tide from within upon your psyche with elephantine riffs that crush what’s left… Continue Reading →

Arckanum – Första Trulen (Folter Records)

As I am sure you are aware, Arckanum is dead! Sole muse and innovator behind the project Shamaatae laid it to rest with swansong Den förstfödde back in 2017 deciding he wanted to spend time on spiritual matters and his… Continue Reading →
