Your No. 1 Source For Extreme And Atmospheric Music And Film.

Author Pete Woods

Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Dolore – Fantasmi (HPGD Productions)

As I am sure the record label is well aware, horror, pain, gore and death are all key ingredients of any good horror film. So too are decent direction, acting, story and scares but show me as film with everything… Continue Reading →

Moonspell, Rotting Christ, Silver Dust – London Islington Assembly Hall 29/9/19

It was expected that this was just a two-band tour with Moonspell and Rotting Christ co-headlining but just before the show I discovered there was an unknown quantity or an extra item in the baggage area. This turned out to… Continue Reading →

Wolok – Fading Mirth & Dry Heaves (Death Knell Productions)

Frankly everything about French band Wolok seems a bit fucked up and not just the music either. The trio’s 3rd full length turned up here with a page of what could well be lyrics with letters missed out all through… Continue Reading →

Golden Legacy – II (S/R)

Blimey I thought I had been transported back in time to a John Peel radio session from the mid-80’s on first giving this a listen. Talk about the most girlie vocals I have heard in many a year. Sugar coated,… Continue Reading →

Unaussprechlichen Kulten – Teufelsbücher (Iron Bonehead)

When even copying the band name from the promo blurb does not work as it’s been spelt wrong there, sheesh… Got there in the end though and this band who I term the unpronounceable cult from Chile sure don’t make… Continue Reading →

Mayhem – Daemon (Century Media)

No background details needed here, apart from the fact perhaps that we now see Mayhem on new label Century Media; they had a good run on Season Of Mist. This is all about the music and not the infamy of… Continue Reading →

Heruka – Turning To Dust (Narcoleptica Productions)

Although active since 2000 it took 18 years for Italian band Heruka to get around to debut album Deception’s End. It was an interesting disc with plenty of ideas going on in it not least due to the heady historic… Continue Reading →

Birdeatsbaby – The World Conspires (DR Music)

Brighton band Birdeatsbaby dip their toes in our world rather than being the sort of band we would normally look at but then again, they co-exist in many musical universes. One only has to look at a recent covers album… Continue Reading →

Arx Atrata – The Path Untravelled (S/R)

This is a path I have travelled since it began back in 2013 with debut album Oblivion and continued 3 years later on Spiritus In Terra. The one thing that amazes me is the still self-released status of Arx Atrata,… Continue Reading →

Profanatica – Rotting Incarnation Of God (Season Of Mist)

So a new chapter for Profanatica. Nope not musically, they are still very much preaching their foul old testament as far as that is concerned so don’t go looking for anything in the way of evolution in that respect. However,… Continue Reading →

Imperium Dekadenz, Agrona & Stahlsarg – London Black Heart 11/10/19

I doubt I am the only person who has been patiently waiting for atmospheric Bavarian black metal troop Imperium Dekadenz to make it over to the UK. Finally they have, to play 2 shows, this and Atmosfest in Nottingham. That’s… Continue Reading →

Trrma Charlemagne Palestine – Sssseegmmeentss Frooom Baaari (Becoq Records)

Pardon, did I stutter? Errr, well it would have been far simpler to simply write politely whence this CD came from and said thanks but no thanks it isn’t really for us but then in doing so I would have… Continue Reading →
