Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Taake / Whoredom Rife – Pakt (Terratur Possessions)

These two bands have signed a musical ‘pakt’ and have been fellow Norsemen entwined on their separate journeys for some time. Like Hoest, V. Einride is a multi-instrumentalist who composes all his group’s material although is joined by ex Bloodthorn… Continue Reading →

The Joy Thieves – A Blue Girl (Armalyte)

I am not even going to try and tag all the rag bag members of this industrial troupe as it would be a ridiculously huge list. Suffice to say that the cast brings to mind the revolving door policy of… Continue Reading →

Death, Void, Terror – To The Great Monolith II (Repose Records)

I know we (well mainly me actually) make the occasional quip about receiving the new soundtrack to the apocalypse but fuck me has it not got even more real over the last couple of weeks? No need to elaborate, I’m… Continue Reading →

Vermisst – Zmierzch stalowej ciemności (Fallen Temple)

First of a brace of discs landing on us from Fallen Temple in Poland sees home-grown talent Vermisst (Missing) in action. Relatively a new band forming only in 2018 they already have 2 demos and a split with Plaguespawn to… Continue Reading →

Lychgate – Also Sprach Futura (Debemur Morti)

Assuming this was an album and the follow up to 2018’s 3rd full length ‘The Contagion In Nine Steps’ I got a bit of a surprise on downloading it to discover it was actually a 4 track EP and shorter… Continue Reading →

Çub – Ouais (Atypeek Music)

More deranged nuttiness from Atypeek and actually 3 other labels who are releasing this in collaboration with them. This French lot were one that I approached with caution as their music is described as math rock which I can’t really… Continue Reading →

Pornohelmut – Bang Lord (Atypeek Music)

A Pornohelmut is? A) Protective headgear to shield against accidental friendly fire in the bukkake pit? B) Virtual reality headgear designed to de-juice the genital area? C) The extreme experimental Texan musical work of Neil Barrett? Well it’s probably all… Continue Reading →

Regen Graves – Herbslicht (Pariah Child)

A moody image that is somewhat focused on times past greats us from the album cover here. The cars look like they are from the 70’s, the sky is devoid of colour and the cobbled streets from an unspecified European… Continue Reading →

Borgne – Y (LADLO Productions)

In the land of the blind there is always the one-eyed king and that king is known as Borgne. Man of a veritable plethora of bands Bornyhake is back just two years after last album [∞] and seems to be… Continue Reading →

My Dying Bride – The Ghost Of Orion (Nuclear Blast)

Talk about borne from all manner of hardships. It’s no surprise and well-documented why we have not heard the studio misery of My Dying Bride for 5 years. Firstly, every parent’s worse nightmare struck vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe when his 5-year-old… Continue Reading →

Concrete Lung – Ecstasy Of Emptiness (Armalyte)

Last heard giving us Fumes in 2017 it seems that with new album Ecstasy Of Emptiness one man industrial outfit Concrete Lung have given us the whole gas pipe to suck on. Ed Oxime the man behind it obviously likes… Continue Reading →

Medium – S/T (Transcending Obscurity)

Although the label is based in India head honcho Kunal seems to spend no short amount of time trawling the globe and looking for the best of death and doom to release to a wider audience. Medium from Argentina are… Continue Reading →
