Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Boarhammer – II: Chemognosis – A Shortcut to Mushrooms (Naturmacht)

How can an album title like this one not create an air of intrigue? Indeed, among a sea of review invites this and the short accompanying blurb jumped right out at me almost saying “boo” in the process. This offering… Continue Reading →

Tanin’iver – Dark Evils Desecrate (Morning Star Heresy)

No shortage of stuff coming out of Australia at the moment and following hot on the heels of albums by Resin Tomb and Vipassi here we have another band Tanin’iver from Adelaide. During the last few nights I have also… Continue Reading →

Gash Faith & Larmo – Social Skills (Howl Chain Records)

Yes, it sounds strange title wise and it is musically too. Here we have a meeting of minds between two Polish entities both of whom have experimentation and sound-sculpturing foremost in their thoughts. On the one hand we have Noise… Continue Reading →

Zmarłym – Ziemie jałowe (Godz Ov War)

Time to polish up the Polish once more as we take on this band from the picturesque looking (well at least on an image search) Końskie, Świętokrzyskie region of the country. The band name appears to translate to The Deceased… Continue Reading →

Madder Mortem – Old Eyes, New Heart (Dark Essence)

It’s a case of old favourites licking raw wounds here as Norwegian progressive metal group Madder Mortem return with their eighth album and follow up to 2018 release Marrow. Although in recent years the group have stuck together like a… Continue Reading →

AWAP – Mongrels (S/R)

There’s no shortage of bands who put creativity and a hard-working ethos above all thoughts of anything resembling fame and wealth. They are just happy making a racket, playing the toilet circuit and capturing some attention over their short time… Continue Reading →

I Don’t Do Drugs, I Am Drugs – ST (S/R)

Last summer I was lucky enough to get a guided tour around The Bestiary, debut album by Aberdeen based band Cyclops Cataract. Building upon the foundations of previous EP ‘Swallow The World’ it was an intriguing and genre-shifting release far… Continue Reading →

Dominion Of Suffering / Phobonoid – Split (Godz Ov War)

Two bands, each with three tracks are presented on this split album and we are promised “Over 40 minutes of cosmic despair, madness and pain.” Sounds like a challenge as far as I am concerned and with void-dwelling cover art… Continue Reading →

Absque Cor – Na zawsze cieniem… (Godz Ov War)

Vos, the man “without a heart” from Poland is back with his second album, the title of which seems to translate to “Forever A Shadow.” The silhouetted entity caught attention with debut album Wędrówkę haniebnie zakończyć a long five years… Continue Reading →

Bafomet – Baptized In Goat Blood (Iron Fist Productions)

Satanic horns aloft it’s time for some unadulterated metalpunk from Japan. This trio comprising of Noctisadistum, Vladphemer and Branded Rebel have been active since 2015 and made a racket over a slew of demos, splits, live album a compilation and… Continue Reading →

Panzerchrist – All Witches Shall Burn (Emanzipation)

After a decade of silence Danish destroyers Panzerchrist re-convened last year with their founder Panzergeneral putting together an almost completely new tank crew. This was probably a bit of a gamble although guitarist Frederik O’Carroll was returning for a second… Continue Reading →

Lipid – The Perfect Killing Machine (Great Dane Records)

The family who play together slay together. Well that could well be the case here as I note that three members of this Perfect Killing Machine share the same surname. Active firstly as Naracus since 95 and then as Lipid,… Continue Reading →
