Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Grave Heresy – Incineration Victory (Godz Ov War)

Watch out, things are about to go thermonuclear! Grave Heresy from Sweden present the second example of what I would class War Metal from this distinguished Polish label recently. If you were mad enough to play this album back to… Continue Reading →

Tzompantli – Beating The Drums Of Ancestral Force (20 Buck Spin)

Quite the mob here with no less than ten members taking up arms around who I assume to be Emperor in chief Bigg o))) aka Brian “Itztlakamayeh” Ortiz, also noticeably of Xibalba. The Californian based crew obviously take inspiration from… Continue Reading →

Putrified – Death Darkness Decay (Godz Ov War)

Wafting a foul odour since 2010, it has taken this Swedish band until now to unleash their debut album following on from a couple of demo and EP releases. First surprise here was the fact they are actually the only… Continue Reading →

Primitive Warfare – Extinction Protocol (Godz Ov War)

Well I managed to write one review that was not thematically inclined towards the end of the world recently but we are back on very familiar scorched earth here. There must be something in the air and here it is… Continue Reading →

Monstraat – Death Upon His Bell (Fallen Temple)

I remember this Swedish duo’s debut self-titled album of 2013 which followed on from a slew of demos released from the very start of the Millennium. Now another decade later, which in the meantime saw them apparently release a second… Continue Reading →

ColdCell – Age Of Unreason (AOP Records)

I seem to have hit a peak of bleak with my review picks of late and knew that with Swiss “Extinction Advocates” ColdCell in front of me that little in the way of light would be shining through. No point… Continue Reading →

Todesstoss – Das Liebweh-Dekret (I, Voidhanger)

Even taking into account those involved in the non-conventionality of extreme music Martin Lang sticks out as being a real maverick and outsider with his art. Todesstoß have been delivering a musical ‘death-blow’ since around 2000 and under Lang’s tutelage… Continue Reading →

Uprising – III (AOP Records)

Despite the title this is actually album number four from Uprising, the rabble rousing project from Winterherz of Waldgeflüster. Personally enjoying album number II but missing the intermediate bridge between this and that, the re-amped and remixed ‘Uprising I.I’ I… Continue Reading →

LAWA – Manifestation (Cineploit)

Fear fans and cineastes rejoice. New sinister sounds have been brewing in Vienna from the boffins at Cineploit. For the uninitiated the two composers at LAWA who the project take their name from are Alain Leonard and Alex Wank and… Continue Reading →

Forgotten Tomb – Nightfloating (Agonia)

Seemingly existing only as pertaining to the album title, the word ‘Nightfloating’ seems an easy enough one to deduce. Unless I am completely mistaken it is the liminal state of being where one is crossing the path between wakefulness and… Continue Reading →

Kommandant – Exhibition Of Conquest (ATMF)

2 decades after declaring war and eradication of the species from their Chicagoan Kommand Bunker we are informed that this EP is considered a time for gathering thoughts and weaponry prior to the next all-out assault. This should not bother… Continue Reading →

Horned Almighty – Contagion Zero (Soulseller)

Four years after leaving us to ‘Fathom The Master’s Grand Design’ everyone’s favourite Devilish Danes are back. They have consistently led us down the left hand path since changing their name from Mareridt back in 2002 and put out seven… Continue Reading →
