Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Napoli Violenta – Neapolitan Power Violence (Time To Kill Records)

Although not a huge fan of themed and ‘gimmick’ music projects they do occasionally hit the right target and I had a big grin on my face the second Napoli Violenta hijacked my inbox. Much the same way as labelmates… Continue Reading →

Goat Torment – Forked Tongues (Season Of Mist)

In the name of Satan, by all means hail, throw the horns at or praise the goat but don’t torment it and certainly never, ever think about molesting one. After all we have all seen what happens in films such… Continue Reading →

Havukruunu – Kuu erkylän yllä (Naturmacht)

What a phenomenal band this Finnish outfit is. I admit I was late to their party with the coniferous crown already having been worn for a couple of albums and a slew of other releases since their coronation. ‘Uinuos syömein… Continue Reading →

Ophis – Spew Forth Odium (FDA Records)

Let’s face it, we all like to vomit a bit of disgust now and again and that is exactly what veteran German doom / death band Odium are doing here on their 5th full-length album. Advocating “No light, no destination,… Continue Reading →

Helheim – Woduridar (Dark Essence)

Of all the wonderful music that 2021 has delivered to our ears when everything else has been far from getting back to normal, to say that Helheim’s eleventh (yes really) album comes with a great deal of anticipation would not… Continue Reading →

Hegemon – Sidereus Nuncius (LADLO)

Taking a slight sidestep from the more pagan French style I have become accustomed to from this label Hegemon are a much more orthodox proposition. Perhaps they have not always been this way as I note that in the past… Continue Reading →

Irrlycht – Wolvish Grandeur (Folter Records)

Perhaps it is due to the fact that so much metal within this sub-genre is tarred with the “post” brush right now, almost as if those that play it have forgotten the origins and meanings. It’s unavoidable in a way… Continue Reading →

Interview – In memoriam Andrea ‘Nebelhexë’ Haugen (1969-2021)

In the wake of the tragic “bow and arrow attacks” that took place in Kongsberg Norway on 13 October 2021 news began to filter through several days later following the identity of the five victims being released. One of these,… Continue Reading →

Dødsdrift – Ødnis (Vendetta Records)

Quickly following up on debut 2019 self-released album Weltenszission, Dødsdrift are a relatively new outfit hailing from Northern Germany we are told. From here things are sketchy as the 5 figures standing hoodied-up with their backs to us prefer to… Continue Reading →

Misanthur – Ephemeris (Season Of Mist)

Although around since 2013 with a couple of demos and a split to their name this is the debut album from Polish duo Misanthur. Helmed by Hellscythe and Draugr they must be doing something right to end up releasing it… Continue Reading →

Paydretz – Chroniques de l’Insurrection (Antiq)

I have to admit that I had incredibly high expectations for this despite never hearing of French rabble rousers Paydretz prior to the promo arriving. This is blackened folk metal with members of Himinbjorg, Véhémence, Skyforger, Cruachan and album of… Continue Reading →

Desalmado – Mass Mental Devolution (Gruesome Records)

Politically charged Brazilian bump and grind time. Desalmado, which I have just discovered means heartless or cruel have been compared to the likes of Nasum and Brutal Truth and that may well be how they sounded over their earlier albums… Continue Reading →
