Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Wiegedood, Sacred Son – London Oslo 19/3/22

Having found the venue and grabbed a cider, early entertainment was provided by the local wildlife. A mob of around 40 Hackney hoodrats had decided to have a brawl outside the chicken shop opposite and were ineffectually trading swipes at… Continue Reading →

Sumerian Tombs – S/T (Van Records)

Creeping out of ancient crypts are 5 sinister, initialized figures from Germany here with a debut album of Vampyric BM. With just two demos previously to their name there’s a lot at “stake” as well as the scope for me… Continue Reading →

Hell Militia – Hollow Void (Season Of Mist)

A full decade on from last album Jacob’s Ladder and it sounds as if the various members of Hell Militia have been through the mill and had disruptive personal affairs spiralling out of control in their lives. That’s even before… Continue Reading →

ΑΧΕΡΟΝΤΑΣ / Acherontas – The Seven Tongues of ΔΑΗΜΩΝ (Zazen Sounds)

A new Acherontas album is always a dark pleasure, the last ‘Psychic Death’ did shatter my perceptions and has hardly left the CD player since purchase. Since then, a name change to ΑΧΕΡΟΝΤΑΣ has been favoured in true Hellenic devotion… Continue Reading →

Sidious – Blackest Insurrection (Clobber Records)

I’m guessing Sidious have changed a bit since their debut album ‘Revealed In Profane Splendour’ back in 2014. It is described as blackened death metal but here they have gone the full route and moved away from the deathly aspects… Continue Reading →

Mara – Loka Mær (Immortal Frost)

Norse mythology and Swedish black metal combine with the fourth album from these pagan brigands. Having been burning the Thursian Flame since 2010 they have gained presence and appreciation for their past work and last album RÖK certainly created an… Continue Reading →

Corrupter – Descent Into Madness (Godz Ov War)

Ready to be corrupted by death? Of-course you are and providing ‘No Life Here’ at ‘The End Of The Rope’ (to name two tracks) we have mysterious French duo J (bass) and M (guitars, Vocals and drums). Although they lurk… Continue Reading →

Phalanx Inferno / Melek-Tha – Order Of Eternal Indifference (Godz Ov War)

Interesting bedfellows on this split album. On the one hand we have a death metal band from the USA and on the other a dark ambient industrial artist from France. So, we get a mix here from brutal and horrifying… Continue Reading →

Schrat – Seelenfresser (Folter Records)

It’s a fine balance with Black metal between orthodoxy and occultism turning into Satanic schtick and what can only be described as clown-shoes when so called serious intentions turn into pantomime. I wouldn’t say German band Schrat who take their… Continue Reading →

Meslamtaea – Weemoedsklanken (Babylon Doom Cult Records)

I am generally intrigued by anything I can’t pronounce and this Dutch group named after a Mesopotamian God along with twin Lugalirra are apparently associated with Nergal. Nope not that one and forget any similarities to Behemoth here. What I… Continue Reading →

Shape Of Despair – Return To The Void (Season Of Mist)

Everyone needs to take things slowly once in a while, even the speediest of musicians. Gathered among this sextet we have past and present members of bands such as Finntroll, Impaled Nazarene and Barathrum among many others, all bands not… Continue Reading →

Lunar Blood – Twilight Insurgency (Pulverised)

I see there is yet another upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre film imminent. Talk about getting as much blood out of a franchise as possible. Here (and there is a tenuous link), we move from the killing fields of rural Texas… Continue Reading →
