Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

The Wolves Of Avalon – Y Gododdin (Godreah)

It’s been six years since we last heard from The Wolves Of Avalon with their ‘Across Corpses Grey’ release of 2016. This comprised of one massive track spanning 30 minutes and a couple of cover versions. We get five numbers… Continue Reading →

Deliverance – Neon Chaos In A Junk Sick Dawn (LADLO)

Although no duelling banjos here there are plenty of aspects making French band Deliverance a very interesting addition to LADLO’s roster. Its their 3rd album and first time I have encountered them. They made an entrance with EP ‘Doomsday, Please’… Continue Reading →

Thy Listless Heart – Pilgrims On The Path Of No Return (Hammerheart)

The Birthday Massacre – London Garage 12/11/22

Iron Flesh – Limb After Limb (War Anthem Records)

I had forgotten that I covered the last album by this French outfit ‘Summoning The Putrid’ a couple of years ago. That’s hardly surprising when you think of just how many “Irons” there are in the heavy metal fire; let’s… Continue Reading →

Black Anvil – Regenesis (Season Of Mist)

The last couple of Black Anvil albums had a mixed reception here, that’s not all that surprising and I think the comment that ‘There are too many disparate and conflicting elements” in regard to last one ‘As Was’ kind of… Continue Reading →
