Your No. 1 Source For Extreme And Atmospheric Music And Film.

Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Flagellated Seraph – Beyond Salvation (Hellthrasher)

Whilst embracing these ‘Hymns Of Reverse Darkness’ I went looking for further illumination on these whipped angels assuming as they were on Hellthrasher Productions that they were Polish. Wrong straight away as it would appear that Flagellated Seraph come from… Continue Reading →

Black Hate – Los Tres Mundos (Dusktone)

Mexican black metal? Yeah I thought so, I was a little stumped thinking of examples too? It is not the place that one would first think of as being synonymous with the genre. Of course there are bands fromSouth Americawho… Continue Reading →

Behexen – Nightshade Emanations (Debemur Morti)

Behexen don’t exactly rush things. It seems to take them a full four years between albums and if like me you managed to miss the last one 2008 release ‘My Soul For His Glory’ that takes you back a long… Continue Reading →

The Gathering – Disclosure (Psychonaut)

This would be the perfect soundtrack to the lazy afternoon’s of a long hot summer. Well it may have just missed the boat but then again it feels like we have missed summer anyway but there could be an Indian… Continue Reading →

Primitive Graven Image – Psychedelic Episodes (Observations On Death And Deathlessness) (Envenomation Records)

Well we have probably all had psychedelic episodes of some kind before and may even have introspectively studied death whilst in the grip of them so the title of this third album from Chesham based UK BM horde Primitive Graven… Continue Reading →

A Look ‘Inside’ – French Extremity Part Four

Behind You!  The stalk and slash film was really enjoying a resurgence around now, it is as though the terror of putting people in peril was ever more popular. France is a country that has done an admirable job in… Continue Reading →

Sabbath Assembly – Ye Are Gods (Svart)

There is more to this than mere music oh brethren, thee process is thee product and to get to the sound itself first we must embrace the ideology. So, Sabbath Assembly were formed in 2009 (and regrettably this scribe missed… Continue Reading →

Australasia – Sin4tr4 (Golden Morning Sounds)

Are you a glass half empty or half full sort of person? If half empty you might think that at 22 minutes long you are missing half an album here along with something else rather important. Ah yes vocals? If… Continue Reading →

Black Metal – Beyond The Darkness (Black Dog Publishing)

Indeed it is “a story that’s been told countless times before.” The origins of black metal as a musical art form are always going to stir interest from those both within and outside the scene. One wonders if centuries down… Continue Reading →

Grisâtre – Esthaetique (Dusktone)

I enjoyed the last Grisâtre release L’idée de Dieu which also came out on Dusktone. It was my first encounter with Rokkr the individual behind the project from France despite the fact he had been active on the demo front… Continue Reading →

Drug Honkey – Ghost In The Fire (Diabolical Conquest)

My first encounter with Chicago based band Drug Honkey was with their 2008 Death Dub album and I certainly liked what I heard finding it uncomfortable listening, quite filthy and experimental and also unique. Silence until an email turned up… Continue Reading →

Sexcrement – Sloppy Seconds (Comatose)

As you may have guessed, this is not going to be the most serious exercise in music ever committed to disc but what the hell, we all like a laugh now and then. Of course with tracks like ‘Heard It… Continue Reading →
