Your No. 1 Source For Extreme And Atmospheric Music And Film.

Author Pete Woods

Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

My Dying Bride – A Map Of All Our Failures (Peaceville)

How many classic albums have started with the sound of a tolling bell and can you name them? I am sure there are several, mind has gone blank but anyone feeling clever feel free to list them in the comment… Continue Reading →

Shining – Redefining Darkness (Spinefarm)

Yes this is the Swedish Shining and they do have a proper album title this time round and have dispensed with the numerology. In case you were wondering though this is album number VIII. I had a very good insight… Continue Reading →

The Fat Dukes Of Fuck – Honey From The Lips Of An Angel (SR)

Yes you really did read that band name right and with it bang goes our sites well maintained Universal suitable for all rating. Yes of course I am not being entirely serious and as you may have guessed nor are… Continue Reading →

Voivod, Doom & Serpent Venom – London Garage 7/10/12

Great line up this and a very versatile one. It caught a few out though as they had to decide between this and Overkill who were also playing down the road but to be honest I did not even think… Continue Reading →

Daylight Dies – A Frail Becoming (Candlelight)

Anyone playing atmospheric doom / death finds it really hard to be completely original and stepping out of the confines of that unholy Peaceville trinity will always be difficult. A certain Swedish troupe aside there is a lot of repetition… Continue Reading →

The Birthday Massacre – Hide And Seek (Out Of Line)

You never know quite what to expect in a game of hide and seek. It could be a nice surprise or a nasty shock, or you might be one of those poor unfortunate people who hides for ages whilst everyone… Continue Reading →

The Victim – Michael Biehn (Anchor Bay)

Michael Biehn will probably be best remembered for his bare assed time tumble to duel with the relentless killing machine the Terminator a film which put both him and the latter day governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger very much on… Continue Reading →

Planks – Funeral Mouth (Golden Antenna)

Planks, what sort of name is that for a band? I know it is getting more and more difficult to find an original moniker but it’s a bit on the wooden side! Bad puns out the way and before you… Continue Reading →

Germ – Loss (Eisenwald)

Back around May I was literally bowled over by a debut album from Germ called ‘Wish.’ It is still very much on rotation and has not made it off the table where things get played rather than shelved, possibly never… Continue Reading →

Various Artists – Ond A Tribute To Enslaved (Pictonian)

We had a rather good tribute to Emperor album earlier this year via Candlelight Records so one for Enslaved was also very welcome. The timing is good too as I am currently waiting for new album Riitiir to come through… Continue Reading →

Marduk, Immolation & Supports – London Underworld 29/9/12

This was one of those mix it up and throw extreme black and death metal bands on a tour together kind of thangs. Whilst some moaned about not wanting to see all of the bands, as far as business sense… Continue Reading →

P.H.O.B.O.S – Atonal Hypernesia (Megaton Mass)

Somehow I keep seeming to pick up long discs with long songs for review and this is no exception. P.H.O.B.O.S. from Paris play pretty much instrumental material (with the exception of a few low vocal mumblings kept well in the… Continue Reading →
