Author Pete Woods

Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Gateway – Galgendood (Transcending Obscurity)

Commenting on last and self-titled album back in 2018 our reviewer stated “Fuck. This is horrible. This is horrible in a thick, black, filthy way.” For some reason they did not come back for a second diseased dose leaving it… Continue Reading →

Somniate – We Have Proved Death (Lavadome Productions)

First port of call before getting stuck in to the 2nd album from this Czech band was finding and reading the short novel they had “found their own meaning” within the pages of and interpreted it as narrative inspiration for… Continue Reading →

Decimated Cross – From The Grave (S/R)

Hailing from the midst of pottery country Tamworth Staffs, Decimated Cross are a fairly young band playing UKBM. They have an EP, a few singles and 2020 album ‘From Pagan To Waste’ to their name so far and I notice… Continue Reading →

Eternity – Mundicide (Soulseller)

Considering that the album title refers to planetary destruction it’s no surprise that this album starts off in a volatile and explosive fashion with the drums blasting in and chaos unleashed. This Norwegian band and leader Evighet may not have… Continue Reading →

Ofnus – Time Held Me Grey And Dying (Naturmacht)

Armed with some slightly altered Dylan Thomas poetry, Ofnus are a new entity but one with roots in other groups such as Agrona, Democratus, Blind Divide & Black Pyre. Very much in the mould of similar UK based bands like… Continue Reading →

Illum Adora – Non Serviam Black Metal (The Demos) (Fallen Temple)

The delightfully entitled Hurricane Hellfukker is the man essentially behind German act Illum Adora (also of Zarathustra) and has been active under that name since 2011. He has seen collaborators come and go through a couple of albums, splits EP’s… Continue Reading →

None – Inevitable (Hypnotic Dirge)

There are none better than None at leading us down dark atmospheric paths, something this anonymous Portland based collective have been doing admirably over four albums. Having been slumbering since they last froze us with ‘The Damp Chill Of Life’… Continue Reading →

Static Abyss – Aborted From Reality (Peaceville)

It’s been just over a year since Static Abyss dropped debut splatter ‘Labyrinth Of Veins’ and shortly after that landed with a sickening thud we had ‘Morbidity Triumphant’ from macabre medical examiners Reifert and Wilkinson to contend with. The Autopsy… Continue Reading →

Adversvm – Vama Marga (Moribund)

Here we have the kings of monumental occult German doom apparently. Who crowned them or whether they seized the throne is something to consider but once we dip into their third album ‘Vama Marga’ a tantric term for the left… Continue Reading →

Infinity – The Untamed Hunger (Immortal Frost Productions)

It’s hardly surprising that this Dutch duo are hungry after a gap of six long years from last album ‘Hybris’. This is their seventh full-lengther and they immediately sound absolutely ravenous. With ties to live duties in Funeral Winds, our… Continue Reading →

Sammath – Grebbeberg (Hammerheart)

Dutch decimators Sammath have been around since the mid 90’s and have to date released seven studio albums. So why have I never sat down and listened to them before? Good question but some bands simply escape your attention. Grebbeberg… Continue Reading →

Valosta Varjoon – Boarisch Grattlig (Folter Records)

Have you ever been on a bar crawl in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz? Well you may have seen bearded Bavarian Blacksters V.V. and Sturmwulf propping up a table if you have. They have probably been thrown out of a few… Continue Reading →
