Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Ministry – The Lost Gospels According To Al Jourgensen With Jon Wiederhorn (Da Capo Press)

This is a book that had to be written and one that I had to read, which made me feel somewhat guilty when it fell through the letterbox due to the fact I knew nothing about it. I certainly felt… Continue Reading →

Tarja – Victim Of Ritual (earMUSIC)

So a new Tarja album is underway and 30th August is the time that her legions of fans can anticipate ‘Colours In The Dark’ dropping. In the meantime some of them (and to say she is popular would be an… Continue Reading →

Guantanamo Bay City Rollers – Dark Side Of The Goon (Grindhead)

It goes without saying that this lot win band name of the month if not the year and it was no surprise to discover when reading into these degenerates that a) they are Australian and b) they don’t take themselves… Continue Reading →

Ecnephias – Necrogod (Aural)

There has always been a bit of a geographic conundrum involving Italian band Ecnephias but then again as this album is narratively focusing on ancient pre-Christian cults they could hardly have embraced their Roman origins here. Musically having heard them… Continue Reading →

Sirenia – Perils Of The Deep Blue (Nuclear Blast)

A new collection of songs from the siren is always welcome for me because as far as symphonic metal is concerned these Norwegians have long been a firm favourite of mine. If you know their history you will be well… Continue Reading →

Von – London Underworld 25/6/13

Everything about this show went FUBAR! First Von were announced as playing a few nights prior to this at The Garage and tonight at The Electrowerkz it was meant to be Absu. Then we heard Inquisition were playing here and… Continue Reading →

Selim Lemouchi & His Enemies – Mens Animus Corpus (Van)

I think it is fair to say that the sudden announcement declaring the end of The Devil’s Blood came as a bit of a surprise and not a good one at all. I was honoured to have seen and photographed… Continue Reading →

Evoken, Indesinence, Ophis & Evadne – London Boston Arms 23/6/13

This was our reward for not making it to Hellfest, a night of long songs and tortured riffs to soak us in misery. Of course that started with the normal weekend tube shutdowns but we are used to these and… Continue Reading →

Bitter Peace – Opus II (Moribund)

I first found myself infected by Bitter Peace on a four band split called ‘New World Black Metal’ highlighting some of the nastiest scourges of the USBM scene. Their coruscating and hateful take on the style had a notable industrialised… Continue Reading →

Cemetery Gates – Mick O’ Shea (Plexus)

The idea behind this book which is expanded title wise to ‘Saints and survivors of the heavy metal scene’ could not be simpler. Take 20 infamous stars of said scene and divide them in half, one half being those who… Continue Reading →

Spider Baby – Jack Hill (Arrow)

If you suffer from arachnophobia this is a review best skipped as eight legged beasties and indeed two legged ones that are descending into the order of the Araneae lurk here. Spider Baby aka ‘Cannibal Orgy’ was made way back… Continue Reading →

Frozen Ocean / Petrychor – Autumn Bridges (Wolfsgrimm)

I knew it would not be long before my favourite musical chameleon from Russia Vaarwel was going to be back with some new music but this time he has brought another artist along for the ride. If you are confronted… Continue Reading →
