Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Vesterian – Anthems For The Coming War Age (Glorious North)

‘Violent and hateful black metal’ is the name of the game for this horde based out of Hollywood of all places! Yep it’s certainly not the first place that you would associate with this style of music unless of course… Continue Reading →

Opthalidon – 0 (SR)

Jeez you really would not want to bump into this lot in some deep dark abandoned factory if you were off doing a bit of urban exploring. Dressed in military surplus survival cloaks and wearing odd gas masks as they… Continue Reading →

Satyricon – ST (Roadrunner)

They don’t rush things do they? With five years having passed since the release of Age Of Nero one could almost have forgotten about Satyricon if their stature in the pantheon of Norwegian black metal had not been so important…. Continue Reading →

Swedecore Roundup (Gaphals Records)

Recently a package of assorted discs arrived and had me scratching my head and wondering just what I had in front of me from a label called Gaphals Records who I admit were completely new to me. Going through them… Continue Reading →

Mother Of Worms – The Grimoire Of Abomination Tales (Schattenkult Produktionen)

Filth, foulest stench fuelled pornographically enhanced necro filth! That’s what we have here from these sick Germans and not only that but they have gone and delivered it on old-school cassette too. Somehow it seems all the more apt getting… Continue Reading →

Ensnared – Ravenous Damnations Dawn (Nuclear Winter)

Perfect triplet of unconnected words making up the title of this debut EP from Swede deathsters Ensnared but it gives you a clue what to expect; hunger suffering and the cold light of day. Having previously been active as Gravehammer… Continue Reading →

Fun At The Morgue – Massoula (SR)

We all love a bit of fun at the morgue don’t we? I fondly remember that time…. Nope must heed the lawyer’s advice and not share things so willingly here as apparently it could get me in some sort of… Continue Reading →

Ministry – From Beer To Eternity (13th Planet)

So this is the last Ministry album ever…. Hold on, been here before, who is anyone trying to kid? There is a reason this perhaps unlucky 13th studio album had to exist and it is a completely legitimate one. Al… Continue Reading →

Candlefest – Altar Of Plagues, Xerath, Zatokrev, Kontinuum, Crown, Ancient Ascendant, The Earls Of Mars – Camden Underworld 24/8/13

The second day of the Candlefest sees an eclectic mix of bands including a few that I have never seen and a headliner playing their swansong. It was an early start as one band I did not want to miss… Continue Reading →

Candlefest – Anaal Nathrakh, Palehorse, Voices & Hybris – Camden Underworld 23/8/13

Since the first Candlefest I never really assumed it was going to be a yearly event but it seems to be very much a part of the calendar now with this showcase of bands on the Candlelight roster stepping up… Continue Reading →

Eibon La Furies – The Immoral Compass (Code 666)

I have been following the work of Eibon La Furies pretty much since they were conceived on a dark eldritch night back in Lincolnshire in 2005. They are one of those bands with a profound English eccentricity about them musically… Continue Reading →

Beelzefuzz – ST (The Church Within)

You really cannot fault the band name can you, especially when it comes at a time when everything decent and catchy has been used. Beelzefuzz whose moniker puts a smile on my face every time I hear it have been… Continue Reading →
