Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Blitzkrieg Baby – Kid’s World (Beläten)

Last album by the beastly Blitzkriek Baby ‘Porcus Norvegicus’ literally chilled me to the (ham) bone. This was cold industrial, martial music for a world on the brink of collapse and it was horrifying in tone and execution. Needless to… Continue Reading →

Anal Blasphemy / Forbidden Eye – The Perverse Worship Of Satanic Sins (Night In Terrors)

Ready to gaze into the Anal Eye? Errr well obviously none of our other writers were and so it falls upon me to pick up such foul duties. No idea what could have put them all off grabbing this one… Continue Reading →

Talanas – Asylum (Eulogy Media)

It seemed a bit of an odd and in a very English way, eccentric idea for UK progressive black, death metal band Talanas to go down the acoustic and unplugged route. However on listening to new mini album ‘Asylum’ and… Continue Reading →

A Pale Horse Named Death, Blood Runs Deep & Stormzone – London Underworld 13/2/14

Just like buses all coming at once there were at least four shows on in town tonight that would have been good to go to. There are always going to be winners and losers when these sort of clashes occur… Continue Reading →

Riddarna – Under Jorden (Gaphals)

I have to feel somewhat sorry for the neighbours. They have only just recovered from me blatting out Alfahanne at rather loud volumes and now they have been subjected to Riddarna, no doubt driving them somewhat mad. Although musically both… Continue Reading →

Behemoth, Cradle Of Filth, In Solitude, Inquisition & Svarttjern – London Forum 10/2/14

A more than heavyweight line-up for a Monday night going on here and needless to say that partly due to this and no doubt the strength on new Behemoth album ‘The Satanist’ the venue was pretty much sold out. I… Continue Reading →

Bast – Spectres (Burning World / Black Bow)

There are plenty of firsts about this album. It’s the debut by London based Bast and also the first release from Jon Davis of Conan’s Black Bow Records. Not only that but apparently it’s also the first album to be… Continue Reading →

Azziard – Vesanie (Mortis Humanae)

WWI Black / Death Metal from the frontlines of France anyone? Well that is what we have here and these troops from the past are not as new an entity as I actually thought on first listen as a bit… Continue Reading →

Voidhanger – Working Class Misanthropy (Pagan Records)

With members of Massemord, Iperyt and Infernal War in this trio’s ranks I was well aware this one was going to deliver a right Polish battering. What with the title ‘Working Class Misanthropy: Of Rapture And Disgust’ (to give it… Continue Reading →

Nebelung – Palingenesis (Temple Of Torturous)

Two guys and one girl wearing neat autumnal knitwear stare out into the camera lens with a dense forest spread behind them. Promo shots can give clues about what the music may be like and in the case of Nebelung… Continue Reading →

Aesthetic Perfection – Til Death (Metropolis)

I have seen the name of this lot plenty of times as far as on the live front is concerned and indeed note they have a headlining show at the London Underworld on the 20th of February with Faderhead. Plug… Continue Reading →

Interview – Dayal Patterson on Black Metal Evolution Of The Cult

If you like black metal chances are you have heard of the fantastic new Feral House published book ‘Black Metal Evolution Of The Cult.’ In fact you have probably bought it like I did at the first available opportunity and… Continue Reading →
