Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Xandria & Stream Of Passion – London Underworld 9/5/14

Due to a bit of a shifty on the running times I only caught a couple of numbers of first band Apparition. I have to admit that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. They were quite a soothing… Continue Reading →

Orbitoclasto – Macerie (S/R)

Short and sweet all round here. This EP came telling me nothing more than the fact that this is a black crust band from Italy by “a bunch of guys already involved in other projects.” They have a pretty unfathomable… Continue Reading →

Killing Joke – In Dub (Killing Joke Records)

With Absolute Dissent and MMXII arriving in 2010 and 2012 respectively naturally fans of Killing Joke are keeping ears to the ground in the hope of news concerning a new 2014 studio album. We do however know that nothing should… Continue Reading →

Nightsatan – Nightsatan And The Loops Of Doom (Svart / Solina / Twisted Films)

Italian post-apocalyptic laser metal (from Finland) you what?? Well actually this happens to be something I am a bit of a connoisseur of due to my other love of dodgy movies. Let me put it in context. With the advent… Continue Reading →

Woman Is The Earth – This Place Contains My Spirit (Eisenwald)

Writing music is the main focus of this trio from the South Dakotan Black Hills and in doing so they have released three albums. This is the second of them originally self-released in 2012 but now getting the reissue treatment… Continue Reading →

E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr – Spiralo (Svart)

Those strange boffins are back dabbling in dimensions in time and space and following up on debut album Kometenbahn from last year. As far as the time is concerned they are manipulating frequencies from around the 70’s and 80’s when… Continue Reading →

Hounds – Begin Transmission 2 (S/R)

I caught Hounds opening for Killing Joke back in March 2013 and found their somewhat brash and pumping electro beats suitable entertainment before the main event. This EP turned up complete with a Killing Joke cover and a 3 disc… Continue Reading →

Velnias – Sovereign Nocturnal (Eisenwald)

I recently had the luck of catching Velnias on tour as support to Kampfar and to say they blew me away with an impressive barraging and windswept performance would be an understatement. I said I was really interested to hear… Continue Reading →

Vanhelga – Längtan (Art Of Propaganda)

Blimey this lot work quickly! I only reviewed the Swedes (album length) EP Sommar at the end of last year and that came rather swiftly from previous album Host earlier in the year and here they are again. Not that… Continue Reading →

Yugal – Enter The Madness (S/R)

Prepare to enter the madness of Yugal, it will twist your mind, bend your consciousness and steal your soul. Sounds like some sort of whacked out B-Movie but no, Yugal are a French band who are releasing their second EP… Continue Reading →

Lord Mantis – Death Mask (Profound Lore)

The last album by Lord Mantis 2012 release ‘Pervertor’ was a rancid, vile seething mass of corrosive guitar work and scathing vocals so as soon as this appeared I was quick to grab it and throw it on my review… Continue Reading →

Holy Moses – Redefined Mayhem (SPV)

Although they obviously don’t have a monarchy I think it is considered high treason not to look on Doro Pesch as Queen of German metal and possibly wanting to visit the country again without being locked in irons I would… Continue Reading →
