Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Pénitence Onirique – Nature Morte (LADLO Productions)

Back with their third “painting” it’s time to dip into the still life tapestry of these six strange masked figures from France. The group impressed with last album ‘Vestige,’ the striking cover of that particular release being a portrait but… Continue Reading →

Efraah Enhsikaah – One Thousand Vultures Waiting To Be Fed (Osmose)

Although I had brief communication with musician Efraah Enhsikaah asking about review possibility, there is hardly any information available about the mysterious artist and I thought it would be impertinent to dig for further facts. In this time of everything… Continue Reading →

Sex Gang Children, Rubella Ballet & Tiss Vampiric – 100 Club London 20/10/23

What have Radical Dance Faction, Culture Shock, Balaam & The Angel, PWEI, Sex Gang Children and Rubella Ballet got in common? They have all played The 100 Club in the space of a week or so. I wish I could… Continue Reading →

The Amenta – Plague Of Locus (Debemur Morti)

Cover albums are not only a good way for a band to express their interests but also can allow them the freedom of expression. I’m stating the obvious here but it all stems down to the choices the band make… Continue Reading →

Autopsy – Ashes, Organs, Blood And Crypts (Peaceville)

The corpse is bloated, noxious gasses escaping from every conceivable orifice as it settles on the slab prior to the mortician impaling it and cutting open. Organs will be removed and plonked into stainless-steel receptacles, the brain examined and dissected… Continue Reading →

The Spacelords – Nectar Of The Gods (Tonzonen Records)

Ah yes, the cover of this album reminds me it is Shroom season. Back in more long-haired and youthful times foraging of liberty caps was an occupation I enjoyed although having brewed them up and digested it was tinged with… Continue Reading →

Vertebra Atlantis – A Dialogue With The Eeriest Sublime (I, Voidhanger)

Here we have an album for those who don’t like their music to stagnate and stand still. This trio from Italy include G.G. from Cosmic Putrefaction, Summit and The Clearing Path in their ranks and make a strange sound which… Continue Reading →

Slidhr – The White Hart (Debemur Morti)

Taking their name from a river in hell this Irish / Icelandic band was conceived at first as a one-man project by Joseph Deegan also of Verminous Serpent. By debut album ‘Deluge’ he was joined by highly regarded drummer Bjarni… Continue Reading →

Vanishing Kids – Miracle Of Death (Aural Music)

There doesn’t seem to be any definitive answer regarding what happened to Jex Thoth who have been mysteriously silent now for a decade. Vanishing Kids who have been active for six albums have two ex-members of the band in their… Continue Reading →

Taubrą – Therizo (Debemur Morti)

This Swiss / Norwegian outfit may well be new with only this album proceeded by a couple of singles but their line-up certainly had me intrigued and wanting to hear more. Set up by guitarist B. (yes one of those… Continue Reading →

Krieg – Ruiner (Profound Lore)

I’m always more than happy to get Ruined by Krieg. First encounter at the beginning of the century with the likes of ‘Black Church’ EP and ‘Destruction Ritual’ were certainly harrowing and I have followed studio output since then as… Continue Reading →

Furia – Huta Luna (Pagan Records)

Those furious Nekrofolk from Poland’s ‘Let The World Burn Collective’ are back and who knows what the hell to expect after the experimentally deranged approach of last EP ‘W śnialni’ a couple of years ago? Well it’s barking mad and… Continue Reading →
