Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Disappears – Irreal (Kranky)

So we are more in Pitchfork than Iron Fist or Terrorizer territory here but we like to mix things up a bit and Disappears sound is certainly one that I am au fait with. I have fleeting memories of their… Continue Reading →

Ethereal – Opus Aethereum (Candlelight)

Blink and no doubt you would have missed the first couple of Ethereal EP’s, the first of which ‘Hell’s Divine Existence’ came out as early as 2005. It was only much more recently that the Liverpool based act caught proper… Continue Reading →

Abyssgale – Hegemon (Immortal Frost)

It’s always a sign that a label is doing good things when they send in several cd’s and after giving them a spin and finding myself playing them right through that I want to keep them all. The latest batch… Continue Reading →

Revolting Cocks – Live! You Goddamned Son Of a Bitch (Wienerworld)

As far as I am concerned this is absolutely a seminal live album and one that’s up there alongside Ministry ‘In Case You Didn’t Feel Like Showing Up.’ There are quite a few parallels between the two, as line ups… Continue Reading →

Dantalion – Where Fear Is Born (Sleaszy Rider)

Album number five from Spaniards Dantalion and my first encounter with them. Apparently the band started as a black metal act but over the years have defined their sound and moved on to play a blend of atmospheric death doom…. Continue Reading →

Tony Tears – Music From The Astral Worlds (2010-2014) (Minotauro Records)

Italian label Minotauro Records recently sent in a load of intriguing albums. They release “music from the labyrinth” and deal with a lot of obscure and cult artists from their home country. Not only that but it appears they take… Continue Reading →

Vardan – Verses From Ancient Times (Moribund)

It’s really no surprise at all that one man machine Vardan is quick off the mark to release an album in January this year. After all the Sicilian threw out no less than three of them along with a split… Continue Reading →

Squidhead – Prohibition (S/R)

“Squidheads, squidheads roly-poly squidheads. Sqidheads, squidheads, eat em up yum!” Well not quite as far as this calamari enthused one man project from Belgium is concerned as it is purely instrumental but if you made up your own words and sang… Continue Reading →

Marduk – Frontschwein (Century Media)

The big guns are keen to get blazing at the start of 2015 and Marduk are quick off the mark to fire it up with studio album number 13. Its thematically a return to the trenches as well, citing their… Continue Reading →

Destroying Divinity – Hollow Dominion (Lavadome Productions)

I don’t normally get my hands on the more brutal death metal releases but this one turned up just before Xmas, got a play and then got a few more, keeping my levels of anger in balance over the festive… Continue Reading →

Albums Of The Year 2014

Pete Woods What a year as far as music was concerned, even if everything else is pretty much shit it is the tonic that keeps us going through it all and there has been no shortage of choice. It… Continue Reading →
