Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Taake, The 3rd Attempt, Orkan and Dominanz – London Underworld 9/10/15

Some call it Rocktober, I call it silly season. Apart from this sterling show London also has Ufomammut playing with Jex Thoth and Cruachan with Ereb Altor on tonight. Doubtless there are others on elsewhere too. Tough choices but short… Continue Reading →

Christian Death – The Root Of All Evilution (Season Of Mist)

Unless you had caught them on tour over the last couple of years you may have thought that Christian Death were finally errr dead! Not in the slightest it would appear as Valor Kand, Maitri and Jason Frantz are finally… Continue Reading →

V/H/S/ Viral – (Koch Media Entertainment)

I should have been sent this on a dubious looking unmarked VHS cassette for review but sadly received a simple link to digitally stream the movie. Essentially though that is entirely what this series of films has been all about,… Continue Reading →

Annwn – Idris Awaits (S/R)

Here’s a real blast from the past. This Welsh band got in touch reminding that we had reviewed their previous demos via past websites when they were active between 2006 and 2009. In that time the band have not split… Continue Reading →

My Dying Bride – Feel The Misery (Peaceville)

We are a bit late to the party here and when I say party it’s not a happy one in the slightest; no jelly, ice cream, balloons and clowns here. The reason why for the delay is that we were… Continue Reading →

Temple Of Baal – Mysterium (Agonia)

We are still recovering from the serious black riff-mongery of VI which features members connected to the Aosoth horde and now another collective entwined to their family tree are here to conjure up more potent magic, making it a real… Continue Reading →

Lifelover, Hypothermia, Eye Of Solitude & Kall – London Nambucca 26/9/15

This was always destined to be a bit of a squeeze but it’s a gig that we never even expected to happen especially after the untimely death of Lifelover’s B (Jonas Bergqvist) in 2011. Taking us by surprise though the… Continue Reading →

Enslaved, Grand Magus & De Profundis – London Islington Academy 24/9/15

It’s early doors tonight but still a healthy amount of people in the venue to witness London based openers De Profundis. They don’t have time to play too much and have to dispense on something old but do have a… Continue Reading →

Mephorash – 1557 – Rites Of Nullification (Odium)

So 1st thing I wondered here wanting to get a bit of historical background is what happened in 1557, leading to the album title? Hmm no real clues to enlightenment there, various fighting between countries, a new bible print, schools… Continue Reading →

The 3rd Attempt – Born In Thorns (Dark Essence)

I had been looking forward to listening to this properly as I had managed to turn up at a listening session for the album a couple of months ago just in time to hear the last song, doh! The 3rd… Continue Reading →

Eaten Alive – Tobe Hooper (Arrow)

Firstly just to clear up any confusion, there were two films doing the rounds on ye olde video shelves during that fondly remembered golden age, both called Eaten Alive and both starring Mel Ferrer. This is not the 1980 Umberto… Continue Reading →

Lucifer’s Child – The Wiccan (Dark Essence)

Not to be confused with the recent doom dabbling’s of Lucifer, this child is a far more fearsome beast and comes to us courtesy of a couple of greats from within the Hellenic black metal scene namely George Emmanuel (Rotting… Continue Reading →
