Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Albums Of The Year 2015

Pete Woods (Editor) It’s been a real struggle just whittling this down to a mere 20 choices. Anyone that tells you that there has been no good music this year obviously is suffering from stupidity, serious wax in the ears… Continue Reading →

What Have You Done To Solange? – Massimo Dallamano (Arrow)

It certainly wasn’t in the hope of getting a suntan but during the groovy early 70’s quite a few Italian giallo directors decided to pop over to London and use it as the backdrop to their murder mystery stories. Examples… Continue Reading →

Funeral Marmoori – The Deer Woman (Minotauro)

When I pulled this disc out of its packaging I was instantly bewitched by its cover-art. The image attributed to Francesco Menicocci is really rather stunning in its grotesquery and just had me staring at it for ages. Reminding me… Continue Reading →

Krysthla – A War Of Souls And Desires (Initiate Audio)

Anybody remember British bruisers Gutworm? Active between 1999 and 2010 they released a couple of formidable albums and threw their weight around live on the UK circuit, playing some hefty shows. I just dug out their debut album ‘Ruin The… Continue Reading →

Nekromantik 2 – Jörg Buttgereit (Arrow)

Please note images used to illustrate this article do not reflect the quality of the stunning transfer presented here by Arrow. Even when Arrow pulled off the unimaginable and released Nekromantik earlier this year the prospect of Nekromantik 2, its… Continue Reading →

Gorgoroth, Kampfar, Gehenna, De Profundis and The Negation – London Dome 11/12/16

This one has a right solid line-up and it is well worth getting down for early doors to catch 1st band on tonight The Negation from France. There may not be loads in yet to witness the band but they… Continue Reading →

Terzij de Horde – Self (Consouling Sounds)

I caught this Dutch lot previously known as Liar Liar Cross On fire when they supported The Great Old Ones at the Unicorn at the beginning of 2013. At the time I found them a pretty hefty brew of black… Continue Reading →

Ironclad – Alchemy And Chaos (S/R)

For some reason the name Ironclad makes me think of some sort of dodgy Italian post-apocalypse or medieval battle type movie (anyone remember Hearts And Armour?). It’s a name forged in steel from a time where gangs of people roamed… Continue Reading →

Secrets Of The Moon – Sun (Prophecy)

Bah you get that all important albums of the year list sorted and drawn up and then something comes along in December sending you back to the drawing board and causing the poor band precariously tottering at number 20 to… Continue Reading →

Furze – Baphomet Wade (Fresh Tea)

Imagine if you will that black metal is a deck of cards. The Spades are the originators, the first and second wave, although of course the Ace is Motorhead, nobody is going to take that away from them. The Clubs… Continue Reading →

Helheim – raunijaR (Dark Essence)

Nope the keyboard gremlins have not been at play here, raunijaR is the correct title and way that Helheim have chosen to represent this, their eighth album. There is always a mark of quality about what they do and this… Continue Reading →

Kiss The Hobo – Абсолютно ненужные коннотации (S/R)

Imbecile metal / avant-garde grindcore from Russia anyone? Well you are in the right place for that here! Maybe not as prolific as the likes of Rogga Johansson or Vardan but if I had to pick a third musician who… Continue Reading →
