Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

The Birthday Massacre – Imagica (Metropolis)

It wasn’t until 2007 album ‘Walking With Strangers’ that I got my first encounter with Canadian gothic synth-pop act The Birthday Massacre. Right back in time, before this they had started out no doubt inspired by a certain Clive Barker… Continue Reading →

Satanize – Apocalyptic Impious Command (Deviant Records)

30 minutes of bestial barbarity here from Portughell. Helmed by Reverend of the Hell Legions and Macabre Tyranny on bass and guitar and Reverend of Diabolical Services and Sinister Sorcery drums and vokills, you pretty much know what you are… Continue Reading →

Alien 2: On Earth – Ciro Ippolito (88 Films)

I have picked up nearly all of 88 Films Italian Collection imprint and been pretty pleased with most of them. It’s been a good chance to upgrade a fair few import DVD’s to hi-def Blu-ray transfers and on the whole… Continue Reading →

Caïna – Christ Clad In White Phosphorus (Apocalyptic Witchcraft)

This UK based act helmed by Andy Curtis-Brignell have always been interesting and highly experimental. I remember the near neo-folk acoustic lushness of 2008 album ‘Temporary Antennae’ being a challenging listen with many ideas flowing through it. Fast forward to… Continue Reading →

William S Burroughs – Let Me Hang You (Ernest Jenning Record Co / Khannibalism)

The posthumous auteur of this should really need no introduction. Author, seer, underground anti-hero, counter-culturist, satirist, sexual deviant, junkie, film-star, wife killer; well he has been referred to as many different things to many different people, most of them true…. Continue Reading →

Deadlock – Hybris (Napalm)

German melodic metal / metalcore act Deadlock have been having a right time of it of late. Founding member and harsh singer Joe Prem left back in 2011 and then Drummer Tobias Graf tragically died of cancer aged just 35… Continue Reading →

Insane Vesper – Layil (Art Of Propaganda)

Satan’s Blade – L. Scott Castillo Jr. (Arrow)

I was intrigued about this one after seeing it pop up recently on a certain auction site due to a US release. I did recognise the rather good original cover art but don’t remember this 1982 film (released in 84)… Continue Reading →

Torc – Tóny Annwnu (Murderous Music Production)

Feeling like a limb has been cut off and you have been thrown to the wolves to defend for yourself? Well that’s certainly the political climate in the UK at the moment for many. Not that this should have anything… Continue Reading →

Fields Of The Nephilim & The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing – London Forum 20/6/16

Serpents Lair – Circvmambulating The Stillborn (Hellthrasher)

A certain shroud of mystery cloaks this lot. Apparently the band are from Sjælland Denmark but there’s no clue as to who the players are, not even the normal black metal initials for their names. One thing that is crystal… Continue Reading →

Norwegian avant-weirdoes Virus have just released 4th album Memento Collider via Dark Essence Records after a break of five years. As expected it is an ambitious and perplexing listen, stemming right back to a time when everything was going very… Continue Reading →
