I’ve reviewed a fair few Comatose Music releases over the years and if one thing is resolute about the label it’s that you can rely on hearing some of the most brutal extreme releases that death metal has to offer and this third album by Indonesian (East Java specifically) is no different. The duo of Ogy (vocals/guitars/bass) and Rama (drums) prefer to keep their song writing within the realms of straight up brutality, instead of delving into overt technicality that many bands in this genre purvey. That being said there is an accomplishment here, every song has its own technical factors and whether that is the guitar, bass or drums the blend produced is excellent as the album begins with ‘Entering Into Calamity’. With a short sample piece the song detonates with Suffocation like machine gunning mayhem topped off by the inhuman vocals that add additional levels of density. Their technical prowess rears up periodically and fans of acts like Deeds Of Flesh will hook into what they have to offer.
With unceremonious massacring ‘The Anguish Of Dysoptian’ follows the opener and thrusts the listener into a maelstrom of mauling riffs coiled around the unerring and battering drum work as the vocal tone seems plunges into an abyssal crevasse. Slightly less intense is ‘False Adoration’ as its slower riff allows it to build up sequentially ready for the onslaught you know is imminent, and indeed it does, the rampant groove riddled riffage produces short incendiary bursts as ‘Mass Murder Existence’ follows it by blasting the shit out of you with riff changes deluging the song without it descending into chaos.
At times you feel like you’re in a hurricane force wind tunnel, the unerring bludgeoning that this duo unleash is sonically maiming as ‘The Pinnacle Of Vile Conceit’ proves so well. I really enjoyed the last three songs on this release that begins with the appropriately titled ‘Relentless Brutality’, I couldn’t say it better really, as the barrage of riffs and drum work superbly. The very short momentary pauses feel like the song is taking a breath ready for the next stage, creating massive momentum. The title track follows and continues the assault, as the virtually gapless listen never allows you a moment to think or absorb, the constant triggering of riffs pin you back with remorseless violence as the album concludes with ‘Apocryphal Hymns’. A lot of brutal death metal bands, especially those with more than a foot in the technical side of the genre, like to end their albums with something more experimental, but not Depraved Murder, the closer is a skull smashing exercise in how to play brutal death metal with a massive sense of melody and ensures this release will top the brutal death metal charts by the end of 2023 I’m sure.
For those who like tech and those who prefer groove in their death metal Depraved Murder have the balance superbly executed.
