There’s a big trend for bands not caring about trends, have you noticed? It’s very strange. Ho hum. Anyway, musing aside this here is the debut from garage metal punks Iron Lizards from France and if garage punk has you imagining that low slung guitar balls out high energy reckless rocking sound then… Yep. From the moment ‘It’s About Time’ cranks up that basic, speeding car sound it’s all about the rush, all about the hooks, all about the energy. And it’s a cracking opener, early Hellacopters being the obvious starting point to look at and just those drawled then barked vocals and the dancing guitars just kinda nod at The Stooges and the New York Dolls
And it really just keeps on going. Athletic drumming driving the whole shebang and those riffs and winding guitar licks, the short bursts of lead work, all twelve racing home well under the three minute mark. And all with that essential feeling that at any moment its gonna shoot right off the rails but never does.
Do they ever slow down? Well not really. I suppose ‘Deathride’ does discover that there is a lower gear and the pedal isn’t quite to the metal. But then ‘Confusion Blues’ dislodges that notion again.
Is this gonna change your world? No. But it might just change your night for the better. Rocking like they don’t get paid by the hour Iron Lizards have delivered a great bit of no nonsense, no frills, no fucks given garage punk and hell we all need a bit of that.
