I was surprised that there are only a few bands called Putrid on my investigations, however there are loads of bands suffixed with the word putrid; putrid this and putrid that etc. This version of Putrid hails from the deepest darkest depths of Peru, just to put an ominous spin on the Peruvians and previous to this second full length the band has released plenty of splits and EPs and since this album was out in March of this year they’ve subsequently released another split with compatriots Grave Desecration.
Like a lot of South American acts this trio hark back to a time when death metal was at its finest, playing rancid, fetid, toxic death metal that conjures up everything you could ever desire within the genre. There’s no technical trickery, no progressive pomposity, no symphonic sickliness, just undiluted ferocity that will blast your face off from a thousand metres away with ease. There is a war like tendency that greets you the moment ‘Warfare In Golgotha’ kicks off. The rapid snare blasting assails in waves as the blackened tinges to the riffing has the fringes of Marduk to its battery.
I particularly like the sound on this album, it has a raw primeval thuggery about it, primitive yet clearly defined on every instrument as the title track follows the opener with a corrosive riff that dissolves the listener deluging with frenzied drum work that has a hyper-blasted chaotic style similar to the likes of Canadian act Revenge. Continuing the barrage is ‘A Cursed From The Chalice’ where drum fills cement the riff breaks and the lead breaks drill holes through the demented charge that is launched at you, the defenceless listener.
A lot of this is very similar to very early Morbid Angel, i.e. ‘Altars Of Madness’, as personal favourite ‘The Victory Of The Trident’ unleashes a veritable tornado of riffing slivers that impale with remorseless glee. The speed is incessant, in fact it is unrelenting, not quite warlike but close as the song releases high pitched screeching lead solos that threaten to shatter glass. Drum filling the opening to ‘The Great Serpent Await Use’ is awesome as the song detonates and borders noise with the song plunging into a chasm of abyssal riffing prowess that is ultra-catchy and continues into the fantastic ‘Three Nails Of Hate’. After the traditional death metal opening riff the song diverts into a crust-punk riffing style with devastating results and I am sure that this lot has been listening to Discharge or Doom to conjure up such a massive riff.
I wasn’t keen on the longer tune ‘Pig Of Liars’ as it decreased the momentum of the album but I could understand its inclusion for a more atmospheric and haunting track initially before it de-evolved into the maniacal stance I was accustomed to as ‘Rotting Kingdom’ returned the album to business as usual. The high tonal riff opening made the songs explosive blast beat far more intense, escalating the song to a pinnacle of ferocity before closing with ‘Morbid Prayers Of Death’. This short but onslaught of a track increases the density of the album with a fine riff break and cymbal smashing head caving section that leads into the obliterating velocity. There is a total warring assault here that leaves you in no doubt that Peruvian act Putrid will leave you rotting in the gutter after listening to this annihilating album.
