Necromutilator hail from Italy and, well, what do you think a band called Necromutilator sound like? Yeah. Like that. Which is probably why Black Blood Aggression crawled from the review lists into my lap looking for a warm place to shit.
After a little sample, ‘Armoured Antichrist’ drills down into us. It’s basic, bestial, mid-paced black-thrash with a dollop of death smeared on top. As soon as the vocals begin to writhe out of the entrails the heavy influence of Beherit circa…well Oath Of Black Blood seeps from the speakers. So yeah maybe I should have guessed that from the title of the album.
None of the above is a criticism. This is well within my comfort zone. The basic production here works well with the style; nothing flashy and perfectly serviceable for the buzzing, downtuned primeval riffing going on here. It really is a ‘does what it says on the tin’ situation.
Songs range from mid paced to thick plodders. Titles growl along the lines of ‘Cold Sperm Of Sathanas ‘, ‘Cypts Of Deprevation’ and ‘Blessed In Hellvomit’. The band are pretty good, sound utterly committed to their heads down, no deviation from the basic brutal blasphemy furrow they plough.
There is no problem here. It is what it is and it’s nicely genuine, dense, black filth that spews from one end or the other and refuses utterly to get fancy. I want to use the word ‘workmanlike’ but that wouldn’t get across how genuine this sounds. This is what Necromutilator want to sound like. ‘Black Mayhemic Torment’ is probably the closest we have to a standout track, with a little extra pace, a little more shake up in the time changes (without wussing out into fancy shit you understand) but there isn’t a bad track amongst the rest.
Black Blood Aggression is a good way to spend forty off minutes or so. No it is not going to change the world. But it doesn’t want to. It wants to be exactly what it is: Primitive, driven, filthy black metal. Beer, sex and Satan.
Fine by me.
