Redwolves hail from Copenhagen, Denmark. Despite some early career line-up changes and a name change from Awesome Mr Powerwolf, they are now getting ready for the release of a new EP, “Walking Roads”. This has the feel of a band that has been around for a lot longer than they actually have. There is a definite classic rock vibe and Redwolves look like fitting into the Graveyard and Horisont category of retro influenced bands.
“The Barrier” thumps into gear and it’s time to kick off with full throttle, old school riffs and nods to the likes of Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin which continues into “Got You On My Mind”. It’s all hip shakin’, head bangin’ crowd pleasers. By now, you will most likely have reached for a beer and settled into party mode.
“Farewell” is the slow burning, build up track. The sound is very Deep Purple Mk lll with vocalist Rasmus Cundell reaching for his inner Glenn Hughes. The band are smouldering and bluesy with some heft that provides a punch. There’s no over-production so you get a good, live feel, which adds a warmth to their sound.
Closing track, “Walking Roads” builds like Deep Purple’s Highway Star which is no bad thing. It’s the EP’s longest track and displays the good balance between the band members. Simon Stenbæk rips out some noodly guitar solos that can’t help but bring a smile to your face. What also seems apparent is that the lads are having a good time and this shines through.
“Walking Roads” is a good listen for those who want good times, hard rock. There’s plenty of hooks and pretty tidy vocals and musicianship. Maybe it’s a little formulaic but Redwolves keep it all quite fresh sounding. Over time, it will be interesting to see how they continue to build their sound. I get the impression they’d be a lot of fun live.
