I’m sure we all have those bands where we just can’t understand why they haven’t ever really taken off and one such band for me is Corpsefucking Art. When I first found Brutal Death Metal these guys were always floating about and I found myself drawn in with their humorous War Of The Toilet Gear album and in particular the song Sachertorture which is a mainstay of playlists for me to this day. These Italian Comedy Horror lovers always deserve more attention and with a follow up from their 2018 record Splatterphobia I’m eager to hear if things are going up or down. The follow up is none other than Tomatized put out through the good people of Comatose Music.
Kicking things off with a typically gross sounding Horror sample that goes on unnecessarily and uncomfortably long (perfect I might add) it’s soon time for the album’s title track. As ever Corpsefucking Art so perfectly toe the line between Slam and Grind. The tones especially of the bass and drums are akin to Mortician or Impetigo and yet the guitars and vocals lean more towards traditional Death Metal or Slam. Hell Of The Living Dead keeps up the ferocious energy with more Grind tinged Death Metal glory. It could even be said that at times the song comes off a little Thrash, those guitars are just so metallic in tone that the sound is quite hard to pin down. Yet this is exactly what has made this band so appealing for all these years. With an almost Gore/ Pornogrind somewhat D-beat styling comes Blood Kitchen Garden, another powerful Grindy slab of enjoyment that is packed with equal parts silliness and genuine brilliance. This theme continues into the wonderfully titled Alien Vs Tomator, a song with some super nasty sounding instrumentation and genuine rapidity.
Getting into a short little sample again before A Nightmare On Tomator Street kicks off into more of the same really. You could say that this album is a bit singular in flow and direction but seriously when you’re reviewing an album themed around the Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes mythos it’s just about having fun. That’s exactly what Corpsefucking Art always has provided too, plenty of stupidity and Death Metal based fun. The Book Of The Dead passes by without much incident save for some more Thrash-like riffage here and there. Then it’s onto Dead Sushi which I can only imagine reflects the film of the same name, and whilst somewhat unrelated please go and watch that film if you like really dumb campy Horror. The song itself is pretty strong, I’m going to guess the sample is from the movie but it has been a long time since I’ve watched it. That aside it’s basically more of the same Grind based Death Metal madness and you best believe I’d go totally mental for a Dead Sushi worshiping song in a live setting. More classic Horror praising next with Phantasm another blasting track but altogether the same as before. The album comes to a close with Escape From Alpha City, again you know what to expect, but what you get is quality.
I’ve been a fan of these guys since my very first delving into Brutal Death and they generally don’t disappoint, with the exception of 2018’s Splatterphobia which left me a little downtrodden. That said perhaps it’s time I revisit that album because it’s honestly the only Corpsefucking Art album I don’t dig that much. Tomatized however sees the band return to their former glory, an album worthy of sharing the stage with War Of The Toilet Gear and Zombiefuck for sure and another perfect entry point for budding BDM fans.
