Seeing a band live from Brazil is never disappointing. Especially two. In this case, you wouldn’t miss it. That night, along with the entire tour that Sextrash and Outlaw did in Europe, was something that no one should have missed.
We’re talking about a blend of the old raw school with the new sound of Brazil. The night started quite early, as we were going to see a total of 4 bands.
First up was a very fresh band, “End of Dawn“. A local band from Thessaloniki, who started in 2019. Their sound is symphonic black metal reminiscent of something quite close to Dimmu Borgir.
A total of 7 members on stage, with 2 vocalists, one of whom was a soprano, managed to produce a very nice and atmospheric result.
Musically, they were very good throughout the set. In terms of appearance, they all had corpse-paint and hoods, giving off something medieval. I liked them, and they are a band with good potential.
Second in line was a band that I’ve been really into for some time now. I’m talking about the Thessaloniki underground death metallers, Freefall. A band that whenever they perform, they crush everything like a steamroller.
Raw and groovy, just as it should be. The members of the band are quite well-known in the local scene, both in the extreme metal scene and even more so in punk.
They started eager, and during their set, they were pushing one by one from the crowd to bang.
Freefall is a band that if they were in another country, they would have swept everything away long ago, so they really deserve attention. They got on stage, destroyed everything, and finished.
After that there was a break, where the venue cleared out for a while, and slowly the time approached to start with the Brazilian bands.
I had high expectations for Outlaw because lately, I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about them. As soon as I saw candles being placed on stage, I realized I was in the right place.
The crowd began to gather, all lights turned off, candles lit up. And suddenly we were in a ritualistic atmosphere.
Ritualistic Post Black Metal, the best of the best. Outlaw played a lot with the lighting to achieve the dark atmosphere they wanted, beyond their music.
The lights throughout were dim, red and blue, with the candles constantly lit. Their music was one of the best surprises I’ve had so far in 2024, they were fantastic.
This particular genre has been my favourite for quite a time, and I really enjoy it when every time I have some expectations, they exceed them.
Well, Outlaw, both visually and musically, are one of the best bands I’ve seen lately without any exaggeration. And just when we travelled into darkness, we reached the point of returning to rawness.
Time for “Sextrash“. Until they came on stage, things in the venue were going normally. Calm crowd, drinking their beer. Suddenly the Brazilians enter the stage, the crowd goes crazy, throwing their beers and whatever else they find. As time went on, things got wilder and wilder, and even more so.
Until we reached absolute madness, to the point where even the band itself started to go crazy. From that point on, we started talking. Thessaloniki reminded of Latin America. At every song, a mosh pit formed, and stage diving was continuous.
To the point that 3 people were jumping off the stage at once, and security was permanently in front of the band to intervene with the ecstatic crowd that kept surfing to the stage.
Madness. Such a thing, I hadn’t seen since Bewitched recently, at least there we expected it. What happened with Sextrash was a surprise.
The highlight was the encore, where the Brazilians played “Ace of Spades”, I don’t need to describe what happened then.
At the end of the concert, even the band members were talking to the venue’s security and saying how crazy what they experienced was, and that it was one of the best concerts of their tour so far. Go see Brazilian bands, it’s good for your neck.
