This scribe has always found Cold In Berlin an utterly intriguing band. They have a certain uniqueness on both a musical and lyrical level. Themes that evoke fear, darkness, strength and the macabre delivered with a passion that is raw honesty and high drama in equal measure. “The Body Is The Wound” is their new EP and stands as a precursor to a long play release to follow. More importantly, it finds the band pushing into new directions since their last release, 2019’s “Rituals Of Surrender” and marks an exciting time in their development.

The electronic, dark introduction to “Dream One” followed by thick, dissonant riffs lays the foundation but it’s the appearance of Maya’s vocals that really let you know this is Cold In Berlin. The pleading, desperate delivery harks back to older tracks like “Take Control”. The sorrowful and hugely atmospheric “Spotlight” is a masterclass in fantastically dark recital. With a more urgent, tribal beat, big Sabbathian sized riffs wrap the listener in a compelling void.

“When Did You See Her Last” has a grand, almost symphonic metal introduction that truly displays the new path for the band. However, for these ears, perhaps one of the most intriguing songs and perhaps the most significant step is “Found Out”. Lovely gothic tones with a slight pop sensibility give it an aura of The Cult. With plenty of bile lyrically over an uber cool groove, this feels like a big step forward for their sound and what they’re capable of.

“The Body Is The Wound” is a powerful statement of intent. The appetite has truly been whetted for the long player to come. I’ve always found Cold In Berlin an interesting band; thoroughly unique, compelling and mesmerising. Even if you’re a late comer to this band, this is one to check out.
