Getting anything from Comatose Music is always a joy, generally their output is a resounding success. Couple this with Texan Brutal Death Metal energy and surely we have the makings of something great. Today we’re talking about Stabbing (the band, not the act of), having formed in 2021 these newcomers soon dropped their debut EP with Ravenous Psychotic Onslaught. Now just a year later it’s time for a full-length Slam inducing barrage with Extirpated Mortal Process.
Opening up with Inhaling The Dead, we get straight into some standard, yet pretty crushing BDM riffs, drum patterns and vocals. It might not be groundbreaking but it is somewhat pleasing, and very well produced I must say. Almost every element of this band is a staple of healthy BDM, the guitar tone, the guttural vocals, the drumming and bass all come together to create BDM by numbers. That said, I’ve spoken about being generic before, is it a bad thing? By the time we reach the title track the cards are certainly on the table. No song is particularly long enough to become drab and the overall delivery is such that I find myself drawn into thinking this is what quality BDM is all about. The days of Deathcore lashings are fading and this kind of killer music is helping get the Slamming genre back to where it should be.
As the second half rolls in I do find myself somewhat tuning out. Musically this is great, stick me in a venue with the blaring out and I’d be quite happy, stay for the whole set and possibly drunkenly compliment the band on their performance. That said, sitting at home in my dressing gown, drinking warm Vimto and nursing a cold this album isn’t spurring me on to dive into a BDM rabbit hole. Truth be told there really aren’t any songs that reach out and grab me, I wouldn’t say there is a sense of wishing the album would end but rather a prompting in my brain of all the other bands I could be listening to.
I’m not going to say Extirpated Mortal Process is bad, because it really isn’t. Especially if you’re new to the genre, this is an album with nigh on perfect hallmarks of the genre as a whole. However if you are accustomed to such traits then they simply come across as generic. I would also attest that this isn’t even an example where I would say, just listen to Devourment or something, because truly Stabbing are fantastic, but for grumpy, jaded BDM old schoolers like myself I’ll stick with Lust Of Decay (or similar).
