Dissonant Death/Black Metal band Veilburner are an intriguing prospect. Their brand new album ‘VLBRNR’ is the latest chapter in the Pennsylvanian’s on-going nuanced storybook world that has been created over their last five albums. As with their last two opuses ‘A Sire to the Ghouls of Lunacy’ and ‘Lurkers in the Capsule of Skull’, this album has been released via Indian label Transcending Obscurity Records.
This self-titled opus is a demonstration in unsettling sounds and uncomfortable rhythms but the lack of cohesive flow in my opinion makes it practically unlistenable. It is beyond doubt that this nihilistic duo can play extreme barbaric Black/Death Metal, but the emphasis seems to be solely on creating an inhospitable and Occult sounding noise without any cohesive pattern to what they are creating.
To me this album is made up of chaotic guitar leads, sporadic drum tones and howling growled vocals, all with some decent synth undertones. However, it never coagulates into a coherent display of musical creativity and as a listening experience feels more like a piecing together of random passages of hostility.
