Until today I never knew that such a thing existed. A perfect melding of 80’s horror synth and grisly Death/Grind that when activated produces one of the silliest and most heart warming spectacles that any self respecting gore fiend could possibly wish for. ‘Deep Gashes and Long Lashes’ is by far the tamest slice of Death/Grind silliness that I’ve ever encountered and that fact only makes me love it all the more.
But before I get too far ahead of myself, here is a little information for you. ‘Deep Gashes and Long Lashes’ is this Ontario, Canada trio’s sixth studio album, and in between all of that they have put out myriad single, EP and split releases in the last seven years. This time out they have appropriately teamed up with US label Horror Pain Gore Death Productions for a CD release.
Quite simply put, some reviews just write themselves and this audio nasty was a doddle. A vast array of 80’s synth work splattered generously over fuzzy lo-fi riffs with no thought given to the ensuing mess. Death/Grind is usually brutal and violent but this is one of the funniest half an hours of my life, sporting lyrics such as “This is for Susan, I can’t stop killing” from the hilarious ‘Quack, Quack’.
‘Deep Gashes and Long Lashes’ is so simple its genius. It has an old school Death Metal demo base, with a Punk like approach and oozes with horror synth from every bloody orifice. It’s silly, engaging, nostalgic and ridiculous and you should worship it! If you need a point of reference, think a gore splattered early Rammstein with horror lyrics sung in English. Pure madness.
