Turbocharged is a name I’m sure I know but can’t quite put my finger on anything in particular so let’s just take this as an introduction. The PR proclaims this three piece as ‘FFO’ old Entombed, Dismember and Swedish punk metal; add in the fact that with ex-Gehennah man Ronnie Ripper on bass and vocals, Freddie Fister of Nekrocult on drums and Old Nick (Slaughter Coffin – live) on guitars and being pretty stable since 2004 you can probably picture the sound now. Yep, great gnarly vocals, a filthy low end riffing sound that veers from dark rough doomed black n roll to thrashing out metal driven by a particularly punked up drum sound. And ‘Stigmata’ delivers all that in just under three minutes.
Now first off this is oddly not, as I discovered, music to listen to if your head is full of frustrations and things in real life. It just bounced of me. However, illness and some mental house cleaning and I came back to this and it welcomed me in with a crooked tooth grin and a kick to the balls.
They get into a kind of slow death metal groove on songs like ‘Slave Rhetoric’ and ‘Phantom Cataclysm’ which doesn’t entirely work for me all the time but the grinding riff is not usually far away, neither is the accelerator. These tend to be slightly longer than their sharper three minute odes like the great ‘Hyper Blasphemous Shitstorm’ and its Motorhead like lead break but they help break the album into digestible pieces.
Basically, Turbocharged don’t fuck about in the slightest so neither shall I. This is a fine, ugly slab of punk metal with some cracking dredging the sewers thrashing riffs and malevolent slow grinds. Spot on vocals and knowing that the mucky groove is never far away just add to it. Well worth a purchase.
Horrible.
