It’s been 5 years since we heard new material from Symphonic Metal band Angel Nation. Not surprising really given that band founder Elina Sirala has been rather busy in her new role of singer for Leaves’ Eyes. But finally she seems to have a bit of free time (clearly with the backing of Leaves’ Eyes boss Alexander Krull, as he has lent his talents to mixing and mastering this album) to return to her original band and record an album in their own vision – “Antares” is the result.
Angel Nation are a bit of an international affair, with Elina being Finnish, ably supported by an Italian bassist, a Greek guitarist and a British drummer, which all adds to their own particular brand of Melodic Symphonic Metal, full of flair and big on melody. I suppose the first thing to note this time around is that Angel Nation sound very little like Leaves’ Eyes, taking a more Melodic Metal approach without any folk-type leanings whatsoever, so the enticement for Leaves’ Eyes fans will be mainly Elina’s vocals and to check out her song-writing talents, which as this album attests to, are none too shabby. The vocals are as adept as you would expect, maybe sitting on top of the mix a little for my taste as I’d like the powerful rhythm section and dynamic guitar work to punch through a little more, but it’s probably just personal taste.
However, it’s not like the vocals don’t deserve to be the focal point, as Elina mixes her soprano voice with her more natural style on “Antares” with apparent ease, which suits the music well. She also displays some new versatility that she has maybe learned elsewhere? All this brings to mind a more melody-oriented Pythia at times, but really the straighter edged Melodic Metal in the music, mixed with the flamboyant vocal style give Angel Nation their own identity. That identity might end up waiting a while for another outing whilst Leaves’ Eyes commitments persist, but at least we got this interlude to hear another side to Elina Sirala with her equally talented band mates.
