The publicity for this dripped bombast and extravagant claims. The job of matching the hype falls to Deathspell Omega, who might have a chance, given their experience in the world of black metal creations. “The Long Defeat” is their eighth full album release.
“Enantiodromia”, which opens the album, hangs in the air. Deathspell Omega exploit the sombre atmosphere, unlike others who would have missed the opportunity. The scene builds in harsh intensity. An angst-ridden narration penetrates the withering guitar and black atmosphere. Turbulence and violent chaos rain down, helped along by furious distortion. Theatrical venom and contemptuous instrumental work mark the never understated “Eadem, sed aliter”. The wall of sound builds up. There is fury and an atmosphere of authority and fear. The wall threatens to break down as the guitarist unleashes a wild solo. Heavy, anarchic, violent … the assault is on. With all this comes a turgid story in ye olde language to fuel the atmosphere. I found that trite but you can’t say that about the musical output which is imperious and fiery. We reach “The Long Defeat” and there is a sad majesty in the air and the music pounds sombrely like a lead weight. The best word I can use to describe “The Long Defeat” is dour. I guess the clue is in the title. The crashing power of “Sie Sind Gerichtet!” is the sequel. The off-key guitar provides the menace in abundance. It’s like an uncontrollable storm. The beat of the drum and the riff of “Our Life Is Your Death” are hypnotising and melodic even. It’s no less nasty however. After some of the grim fare we’ve had, this is a breath of fresh air and no less potent
Strangely my nerve ends went numb while listening to this. The story and the hype behind “The Long Defeat were lost on me, and at times I found it oppressively grim but I appreciated the constantly evolving malevolent atmosphere and the skilful presentation by this talented band.
