There’s a title to conjure with. A hint of Burzum history, a glance back at old worlds or a comment on where the world of music is now? All of them?
Anyway, we have three new songs from this excellent UKBM band to enjoy, just about eighteen minutes of atmosphere and haunting black metal.
‘A Shadow Of What Once Was pt1’ begins with a low, buzzing riff and howled vocals, a chilling feel that recalls a Burzum-esque sound but with a certain British feel that Wolvencrown always have. It truly sets out a snowbound, icy land for us. Long shadows between trees, eyes peering from the undergrowth…. Haunting music. Pt2 is from the same cloth, but fashioned with deeper melody, an undulating sound. It layers melancholy, a soft drift into closer ‘Coming To An End’, a beautiful bit of dungeon synth style music. A reverie, a few lost tears for the world fading.
Bitter, moving, haunting. Trapped here in my shack, it wraps around me and comforts me. I’m staring out of my window onto a snowbound scene. Stark trees, fox trails on the ground, crows searching hard for food.
This fantastic EP couldn’t have come at a more perfect time.
