There’s a part of me that gets very excited when I see new releases from Comatose. I’ve been a huge fan of the label for years and years and now that I get to review their stuff, that’s pretty exciting. Today we look at a band’s debut, which excites me further still to think that a band have been added to the roster without much behind them. That said debuts can often be full of bands finding their feet, or hammers in this case.

Today we look at Colossus, a Tech inspired Brutal Death force comprising of members from Lividity, Cryptic Fog and more. Now I’m a big fan of Lividity and particularly their brand and style of more traditional BDM, so I was very eager to see how this translated into a more Technical setting. The band’s debut Degenesis promises an awful lot of cosmic terror then wouldn’t you say? Can it live up to the hype though?

Talk about barbaric, Becoming All Forms lures you into thinking it’s some silly intro track, but nope. Holy hellfire that’s some slapping Brutal Death Metal. Rip roaring speed, a chunky little Slam, tasty bass tone, I’m in for this one! Keeping up my favourite things in BDM is Iniquitous Macrocosm, giving me Sci-fi vibes, little nods of Tech and a sound reminiscent of Defeated Sanity I’m overjoyed by this traditional hailing BDM album. The album actually reminds me in a lot of ways of Cerebral Bore’s Maniacal Miscreation, which is no bad thing at all, innovative yet firmly locked in the ‘old ways’ wonderful BDM.

Maybe I would like a bit more Slam in this album though. I find the music highly entertaining and interesting, yet I think it suffers from that Putridity quality of too much speed too often at points. Violent Ichor Of Primordial Ascension hits hard with further Tech bordering qualities, especially in the bass and guitars. Similar traits are found in Spiteful Obliteration Of An Obsolete Reality, again not complaining but a bit more Slamming wouldn’t go amiss. The final title track is pretty huge, it has another sampled intro, a theme that runs throughout and works pretty well it has to be said. The solo within the song is also a nice touch, shows that the band are willing to experiment outside of a strict BDM diet. This is a great showcasing song (minus a lack of vocals) and really I feel like that’s a statement for the whole album, a showcase.

By which I mean that this is an album that give us a flavour for Colossus. It’s short and sweet, yet big and bold in delivery. There are a lot of notions in the album that I really enjoy but I think the variation needs to flow throughout it a bit more. Often Slam tracks and Tech tracks feel very lumped together in a uniform fashion. This is certainly a band to watch though, I think they have a lot of promise and I hope things are a bit better structured in a following release.
