What a filthy way to start 2021. Dispyt released this album in December but I put back listening to it until now to allow it to kick the last dregs of sluggishness from my post yule being. This three piece burst forth from Pietersaari in Finland in 2016 with their own brand of blackened crust punk and this cacophony is their second full length following a few splits and E.P.s.
This is pedal to the metal fury from the get go. Taking their cues from other punked up power trios with gold like status Motorhead and Venom this is filthy fucked up, scream till you puke, headbang till you collapse chaos.
There are various elements of microgenres throughout. Groovy sped up death and roll, Black metal leads firing off into the depths of forests and even on Verkligheten Kallar what sounds to me like mid Eighties Japcore. Matthias Lilmans bass rattles so loose that it threatens to fall apart – he channels Dan Lilker in his playing and there is certainly some Brutal Truth style low licks to slap any Grind-fiend round the chops.
Juuso Englund knows when to fire off high pitched squeals and when to just shovel heavy crushing riffs onto the pounding resonance of Owe Inborr behind the kit. According to a quick bit of net research all three musicians share vocal duties which explains the ability for the singing to switch effortlessly between crusty punk rasps and Black metal growls.
This album is a delicious filthy soup of all things grimy and sweaty. Take some old school Motorhead and Venom. Add in GBH and Discharge, Darkthrone, Siege and Amebix and then grate Entombed over the top and then smoke it in a plastic pipe using asbestos as a filter.
