This two track, twenty eight minute MCD is my second meeting with the curiously monikered Into Coffin. The title says it all really as far as themes go; we’re in the world of Azathoth and its ilk, Lovecraft’s nuclear cosmic insanity and the roiling chaos at its heart. Musically we are in doom/death territory, occasionally slipping into almost funeral sloth, with nicely bass heavy, rumbling riffs and a constant, solid drum barrage to keep it on track.
There’s a nicely dark, descending atmosphere to both the tracks, a steady pull on the listener. The slightly low in the mix, almost breathed but harsh vocals help with the otherworldly atmosphere too and the production is serviceable without being exciting.
I think the problem I have with this is the same as I had with their debut full length only slightly magnified. On that there were flashes where genuine chaos lurked just on the edges of their sound, some where it crashed through, and these were the moments when Into Coffin sounded their most evocative and vibrant. Here what we have is well played if a little safe doom death. The feeling of control is paramount. Now this is no bad thing as far as musicianship goes, and you need control to highlight, to juxtapose with the descent into chaos. Only here there is no chaos except in the titles. It all plays out as a decent enough slice of doom/death but that’s as far as it goes for me. Sorry guys, but maybe we’re looking for different things so give it a whirl and see what you reckon.
