Eneferens formed in 2016 and is the majestic monster of American, Jori Apedaile. Jori delivered his first full length beast, in the form of ‘The Inward Cold’ and he is now ready to unleash his latest masterpiece, ‘In The Hours Beneath’, which is a behemoth in its purest form.
Eneferens is a complete one man army, and Jori has built it from the ground up, purely without any assistance. He performs all instruments alone, including the enchanting vocals, and he handles all the recording and production in his studio, The Black Lodge.
This release is obviously heartfelt, and the passion which has been injected is so full on, it’s pretty much overflowing, reminiscent of the Niagara Falls itself.
‘In The Hours’ is built around 6 tracks, nearly 43 minutes’ worth, and would be ideal if you were in a candle-lit, dark abode, with the snow falling heavily outside. It conjures up images so mesmerising, you could be transported to any deserted, bleak wilderness you wanted.
The opus is started with ‘morning’ and builds gradually before the guitars kick in and transports you to a higher plateau. ‘Through The White’ continues proceedings with more of a tempo and upbeat melody, which lends itself more to the cleaner vocals which Jori is showcasing.
‘Refuge’ is up next and injects some almost death metal style growls to the party, and these sit alongside rampaging melodic riffs, which leads to an instrumental ‘Upon The Black Mountain’ which also encompasses pianos to add even more atmosphere to the darkness.
Eneferens may be a little known diamond, glistening from below the snow drifts, but if people are opened up to the true majesty of this pure genius of the black metal world, then I am sure they will fall under the mesmerising spell that is conjured up here.
Turn out the light, close the door, sit back and relax. This really does take you on a journey and its one I’m glad to have been a part of.
