“Please Explode” what a polite way to put things. So much nicer than “Circle pit NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW”
The title is where the politesse stops though. “Mudfucker” erupts from the speakers with the urgency of a bad pint exiting the colon. This debut full length effort from the Charlotte death/Grind crew pulls no punches. Blast beats, mixture or death growls, screams and even cleanish vocals shat into a soda stream to create an effervescent heady brew that will please hip young deathcore kids and grizzled old crusty blokes and blokettes alike. Rattlesnake Steps and single “Punching Nancy Ryan” are dipping swirling maelstroms of tracks that feel like being pebble-dashed with audio. As soon as I am getting into them and thinking about how to describe the deliciousness of them they are over. Do check out the video for “…Nancy Ryan” though as it is a wholesome cheeky affair that quite surprised me. “Our Creation” slows things down a little and offers more of a death chug with elements of Six Feet Under and even a quasi-industrial feel. The DM groove continues with “Vicarious Living” though the pace is picked up before “Drifter Aftermath” blasts back in all its grindy goodness before drifting into a Slayeresque guitar groove.
This band are not prepared to sink into obscurity like so many other bands and offer enough twists and turns to keep the listener engaged. “No Ones Fucking Waiting” has the much loved groove and brings in elements of hardcore and post hardcore into the mix with a hint of Dimebag in the spiralling riff. This band appears to be made up three guys who love their heavy music in all its guises and are unafraid to wear their influences on their rolled up sleeves. “What You’ve Done is Gone” is intense as fuck and show that when this band give themselves a little more time to develop a song they can build it into a monstrous cacophony filled with gravitas and bombast as well as fireworks and flash bombs. I could go on to give each of the remaining tracks a one liner to describe their greatness but this is an album that needs to be heard not typed about. “Bear Molester” has featured on my TotalRock show a fair few times and I never get tired of the big drums at the beginning nor the manicness that ensues when the vocals kick in.
Do yourselves a favour and pick up Please Explode now so you don’t have to pretend to have been in at the beginning when these guys are huge.
