It’s been a while since I had anything sent up from the no nonsense Hells Headbangers label so this was nice. Doubly so that despite missing their first album I’ve had half an eye on these Italian metal punks. Triply so since I just watched the Mad Max: Thunder Road trailer. Yep with songs like ‘Fear The Mohawk Reaper’, ‘Hold Up Your Fuel’ and ‘Eaten Dust Overload’ there’s a big punk-post-apocalypse thing with Children Of Technology and their sound is just about as basic and stripped back as that needs.
Inside this it is all subtlety be damned, headrush riffing and heavily accented rough ‘n’ ready croak and spit punk vocals. ‘Future Decay’, the opening song, sets out the landscape nicely: Hard edged punk metal riff with a catchy gang vocal refrain. Yeah it is a pretty much one riff per song, no fuss, no mush charge but the production is nice and stand-offish so it hits you with all the jagged edges it possesses and besides every now and then you really do have to wind music back to basics.
With the exception of a couple of intros like ‘Eaten Dust Overload’ Children Of Technology have basically one forward gear with no reverse. It does mean that if you aren’t in the mood for just some serious thrashing about this can easily slide into one sound, but if you are in that let loose frame of mind it’s a real headspace cleaner, and a thoroughly enjoyable one. Plus at barely over half an hour long it really knows what it’s about, gets in close, rattles teeth and brain, wedges some cool hooks in there like the title track and closer ‘Fear The Mohawk Reaper’ and fucks off to find the next fuel dump.
Turn off your IQ, neck a beer, give your hipster self a brutal kicking and lie back and let Children Of Technology jump start your lizard brain. Can think of far worse Friday nights. Good one.
