Sometimes it’s good to take a punt on something new.
Usually I get the death / thrash / grind stuff to review (avoiding anything ‘prog’ like it’s a saltwater crocodile with AIDS ……..and a flick knife) but whether it was the change in climate or the fact I was full of tramadol or maybe (and most likely) the daft band name, I picked Peter Pan Speedrock’s latest offering from our recent review list. I knew sod all about them but what a filthy punk & roll masterpiece it is!!
‘Buckle Up And Shove It!’ is the ninth album from these Eindhoven based rockers and, ashamedly, at the time of writing I’ve heard none of their previous output but that’s gonna change. I ran their name past Ed & Stephan, two mates in the Netherlands and the feedback was nothing but positive.
This band fucking ROCKS! Motorhead is an obvious influence but add in Hellacopters, Gluecifer and Nashville Pussy and you’ll get a fair idea of what they sound like. Dirty, sleazy riffage with an almost psychobilly slant to the rockage. The rhythm section of the two Barts rumbles and pounds, sounding suitably apocalyptic while the grimy riffs, wicked solos and sneering vocals of Peter Van Elderen are the icing on this grubby little cake.
From opening track and first single / video ‘Get You High’ you’re treated to thirteen tracks of energetic, balls out rock & roll. No quarter given, no frills and with only one volume setting applicable…. fucking 11!
Seriously if I was planning a biker meet or custom car rally these boys would be my band of choice. There are few bands that I’m never not in the mood for, Motorhead are one of them, Kiss is another and now I can never see myself not wanting to play this, sure the new Triptykon album is awesome but you’re probably not gonna pop it on when you first wake up or when your mates pop over for a barbecue…. unless you want it to be about as much fun as Morrissey’s stag night!
Chin stroking, hipster wafting post-core this ain’t! Good time raw-ass rock & roll? Oh yes!
There’s a couple of surprise covers too, a cheeky blast through of The Damned’s classic ‘New Rose’ and album closer, The Yardbirds ‘Heart Full Of Soul’ seals the deal.
Not much else to say. If you want it, and I can’t imagine why you wouldn’t, you should go out and buy it sharpish. There’s few bands of this genre that can pump out a record of this quality, Chrome Division can only dream of sounding like this, the authenticity cuts thru like a (rusty) scalpel.
Now pass me a bottle of Old Rosie, I’m hitting play on this mutha again!
