ancient-vvisdom-deathlikeAncient VVisdom are a band whose reputation is certainly as dark as their music; their debut release ‘Inner Earth’ was a split with the infamous Charles Manson before they exploded onto the scene in 2011 with their first full length ‘A Godlike Inferno’. Despite being relative newcomers, the occult rockers have been showered with critical acclaim, so it is with eager anticipation that their sophomore offering ‘Deathlike’ is met.

This album is heavy on the acoustics, however, this works to the band’s advantage in helping them to deliver their bleak and powerful message of the pain of life and death. Overflowing with harrowing moments, the agony is ever present within Nathan Opposition’s vocal conveyance. Whilst this record is depressing beyond belief, when listened to within a different frame of mind it can also be incredibly uplifting and soothing to the soul. ‘Far Beyond Good and Evil’ is both majestic and poignant with underlying tones of dark menace rooted deep within the riffs.

As beautiful as it is miserable, ‘Deathlike’ is by no means a classic album that can be picked up and enjoyed freely and often; it is an intense listen that possesses the ability to capture the mood and quickly sour it – these twelve tracks should be approached with caution and appreciated in moments when clarity or a harsh reminder of the truth of reality is sought after.
