Five years since their inception, and three years since the release of their EP, Italian black metal outfit Veneror have at last put out their first full length album. The artwork is stunning and the lyrics, revolving around black magic, witchcraft and Satanism, have clearly been well researched. It is evident, before even playing the album, that this a band wholly dedicated to their craft.
This album is stereotypical black metal to its very core with dubious song titles aplenty. An eerie and atmospheric intro is quickly followed by seven aggressive, fast paced and straightforward tracks all simplistic in their structure and delivery, which fans of Horna and Sargeist will doubtless appreciate. However, it is the band’s ‘no frills’ approach that is their undoing – with nothing complex or really even interesting to captivate the mind, it tends to wander away from the music itself.
‘Percussimus…’ is certainly an enjoyable album and Veneror’s uncompromising attitude and thrashing, shrill musical integrity is admirable. However, despite their best efforts, this is a record that is often monotonous and the lyrics far too repetitive. The trio have formulated their music from cramming as much speed and brutality as they can possibly manage into each individual track, when they would have benefited from producing something with an occasional change in riff pacing or a little ambience. A solid first effort, but totally unremarkable.
