Following on from their debut album ‘Murderer’, this Danish death metal band really have upped their game on ‘Godless’. The band has clearly developed their music and they are brave enough to have a more modern sound with an older style of music. I hate these bands that think lo-fi crap inaudible sounds are kvlt, it is not a well-received move to me, that is why I am so pleased with the delivery on ‘Godless’. The overall pace of this release is faster, maybe a little thrashier in places but fans of the debut release need not fear, the vintage style of ground shaking heaviness you are accustomed to is still present.
‘Pest Grave’ is an amazing tune and what this band do is almost reinvent themselves into a modern forceful battering ram of energy and this gives you a buzz. Musically, simplicity also works in the bands favour; there is no technical mastery, no guitar Worksop stuff, just good solid (beneath) ground death metal. Ok, you have exuberance in the solos, but come on; you have to have something don’t you! If you like some slow doomy styled death metal intros then check out ‘Surrounded by the Dead’. This further develops sounds that would possibly be considered slightly more blackened, these are good places to be but if you want further proof, wait till the ungodly vocal tone hit your ears.
Subtle development and not treading too far from the path of their debut effort, Deus Otiosus’ second album ‘Godless’ takes the bull by the horns and forces you to embrace the really cool atmosphere on this album. I really found favour with this band and this has been further solidified by this recent output, although I still prefer the debut release. This is one of those albums that I would really recommend if you like this style, the solid style is authentic and ‘Godless’ is in places priceless.
