Antropofagus. (Try saying that after a few!) Are Italian brutal death metallers who were first around in 1999 when they released their debut album ‘No Waste of Flesh’. Then two years later their EP ‘Alive is Good… Dead is Better’ was unleashed. Then for personal reasons, a ten year gap… what happened then I guess is only the band themselves know. However, they bounced back in 2011 with a split cd with artists Putridity, Mass Infection, Prion and Infected Flesh. Shortly followed by gigs with epic bands like Deicide and Belphegor. Now in 2012, finally another album, ‘Architects of Lust’ which was apparently inspired by Clive Barker, is soon to be released.
Wasting no time at all with fancy intro’s, the first track ‘Architecture of Lust’ cracks you in the nose with an array of insane blast beats, some demented growls and the dirty riffs makes it even more special. ‘Sanguinis Bestiae Solium’ shows off some guitar wankery, quite impressively of course! And the drum rolls on this one are (yes I’m going to use that word) BRUTAL! The powerful vocals sound like they could easily induce a raging sore throat, whereas ‘Demise of the Carnal Principle sounds like the drums are fucked so they’re using pots and pans instead, anyhow, for some reason it works. The drums seem to be sorted now on the next track ‘The Lament Configuration’ with some groovy riffage and the vocals are sounding even more demonic to the rest, especially with the occasional roars.
Alas, an intro! The spooky film effect which pummels in with the track ‘Exposition of Deformities’. On this one, you’d think the vocalist had morphed into some satanic thing, and as for the guitarist… superb stuff!! Sounding a lot like Behemoth with the added pinched harmonics, pure filth!.
So what people might well notice about death metal is a lot of it sounds the same, and ‘Eternity to Devour’ is no exception. The only thing making it a little different from the previous is a couple of guitar riffs which are hardly noticeable. However, ‘Sadistic Illusive Punitanism’ presents us with something a tad different with some bouncy riffs , a simple but effective guitar solo, and yes, you can actually have a bit of a windmill to this one without breaking your neck. ‘Blessing Upon my Redemption’ again sounds a little too similar to the previous, so then there’s the last track ‘ Net Hegnah Av Haxon’ Another quality intro of drumming and what sounds like someone trying to tune in a radio station. The riffs on this are fantastic! This to me should have been the first track. Probably the darkest on the album, the riffs are deeper, the drumming steady with only a few changes and the vocals, pure evil!…. wow!
Definitely one to recommend!. It has every ingredient for any death metal fan to want it and enough talent to see them at festivals like Wacken. Again, some of it is very samey, but that’s the case with most death metal.
